Did Your Child Play Aimlessly Today?
The joys & benefits of free play - its so important to let kids just be kids!
By Tanu Shree Singh..

A picture popped up on my screen today while cleaning up the desktop. The boys and their friend were playing in the sand with a myriad of sand toys. The younger one was carefully shovelling sand and covering each inch of the other toddler's leg with it. That's what most evening looked like. Sometimes they'd run around with arms stretched out pretending to be a pterodactyl, at others they'd just chase each other. We got quite a few disapproving looks since their peers were enrolled in academies to 'learn' sports, dance, maths, and the revered p's and q's. Mine just played.

Presents or Presence? What do kids need?
Read this touching story by Akshata...
Aditi looked longingly at the beautiful doll house. Sweta's mother was just back from a Manager conference in Tokyo and had got her the doll house as a gift. Sweta's house was full of lovely dolls, toys, the most adorable teddy bears, the prettiest frocks and ribbons and dainty shoes. Everything that Aditi dreamt of but could never own.
Aditi and Sweta were friends since they were tiny tots. Sweta's parents worked in good positions in MNC’s; her mother was always a working mom and was doing very well professionally. She did not get enough time with Sweta but showered her with umpteen gifts, chocolates, and toys. Sweta had to just name it and it would be there by her bedside in a few days. Aditi's mother was also a working woman prior to having a baby, but once Aditi was born, Mummy decided to stay at home. She wanted to devote her time in bringing up her child. She herself was a daughter of a working mother and she knew how much she longed for her Mom, how much she missed her.

The thing is that even though we might crib about all the hard work our kids make us do, We know they will very soon leave our nests and fly away. Kanika has already started to feel the separation anxiety even as her toddler decides to spend a night away at Nani's. Read her blog to see how she is faring and share your experiences with us. You also want to write for us, let us know. We are after all the best Parenting Blog in India :) !!

Hi everyone! As you all know, Bookaroo is India's first children's literature festival that began in 2008. The 8th edition is round the corner (November 28-29, 2015) and they need your help in making it happen. It is driven purely by love for books and is a free event which is open for everyone to attend. I have seen children discover their favourite authors, and their love for books here. It would be unfortunate to see it fade away due to lack of funds. Please help!
Every amount counts.

From our Editor: Lots of fasting and feasting going on this week for us. There is smog in the air because of husk burning in neighboring areas but there is also a lively, festive hue that renders the days very pleasant. We are preparing for a colony Diwali Mela this weekend. Nukkad natak, group songs and bake sale are being planned. There are also Diwali Melas happening all over the city. So we bring you our very popular Festive Photo contest. Just click pictures as you dress up for a party, a Mela, a family outing or a shopping binge and upload them on our contest page. http://www.rivokids.com/festivephoto

Learn how famous Author Shabnam Minwalla gets ideas for her books in this hilarious Blog article! From our RivoBlog....
http://www.rivokids.com/rivoblog/how-i-get-ideas-books
Ideas can sometimes pop up in the most unexpected ways. This is what I learnt from my first book, `The Six Spellmakers of Dorabji Street’.
For many, many years I had wanted to write a book. And so, for many, many years I waited for inspiration to arrive. I would sit in my car at traffic lights and wait. I would peer out of my window on a hot afternoon and wish. I would read wonderful books and sigh. But nothing seemed to knock on my door -- except the courier and the plumber.
The fault, of course, was mine. I expected the idea of a story to come to me like a perfect recipe. You know what I mean. Something along the lines of:
“The Girl who Stormed Santa Cruz”
Ingredients:
Two girls aged nine
One granny with three teeth
One villainous harpsichord teacher
And, of course, this perfect idea refused to arrive.
