Short-tailed Albatross (juvenile) observed 20 nautical miles SE of
Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada.

The global population is thought to be around ~2,100 individuals. They were harvested almost to extinction during the early 1900s for the ornate gold feathers of adult birds, and possibly for food. Now their breeding range is restricted two islands: Torishima and the disputed Senkaku Islands in Japan although one chick was successfully reared recently on Midway Island near Hawaii. Torishima Island is thought to host 85% of breeding adults. Adult and juvenile birds roam and forage over a wide area of the central and north Pacific, particularly the Bering Sea. On March 21, I saw THREE Short-tailed Albatross in one day, which is absolutely out of this world! They are very, very rare.
