There are so many reasons why you might want to try a new distribution. For all intents and purposes, the desktop has very few jobs when it comes to the “average” user. You need a desktop that: Runs a web browser; and if you’re a Google Docs user, you can skip the next item! Runs+ Read More

Your new operating system is here. Introducing Solus 1.2 https://solus-project.com/2016/06/20/solus-1-2-shannon-released/
Overview. We are proud to announce the release of Solus 1.2, the second minor release in the Shannon series of releases. Solus 1.2 builds upon the groundwork of 1.1 and 1.0, with continued improvements to Budgie, a huge focus on software optimizations, in addition to laying the framework for ...

Awesome news +Solus
I have moved my primary laptop and two family members to Solus so far :)

It's actually difficult to grasp the enormity of the Solus 1.2 release..
I mean - we're talking months of distributed development, many updates, fixes and innovations, the advocacy of a native Steam runtime, the production of LSI, ... wait I'm saying too much ;)

You'll have to wait for +Joshua Strobl's awesome release notes. I am putting an absolute ceiling of 48 hours for release, with a view to a release tonight/tomorrow morning. The bummer-factor will be waiting on mirror syncs..

So, this G+ page recently hit over 5 million views, so I know a couple of people are reading this at least :P Give this post a reshare if you're going to be seeding the torrent with us later =)

(And you will try it :P)

This has always been intuitively clear. Now, there is mounting empirical evidence proving it.

+Lucas in the open source community, it's sadly not surprising at all when the community version beats the pants off the official version. A good example is Google drive. The grive app connects seamlessly with Nautilus, syncs nicely and honestly, I forget it's installed most of the time, just as any good syncing solution should allow for. The official Google drive app, well, I'll tell you when I find an official one not involving a web browser.
For Skype, Microsoft's solution is nothing more than ghetto Skype already provides and falls short of what skypeweb plugin for libpurple providers with integration. In fact, if it provided voice integration, the skypeweb plugin would be superior in every way.

Steve Morgan, Editor-In-Chief Cybersecurity expert John McAfee and a team of four other hackers, using their own servers located in a remote section in the mountains of Colorado, were able to read an encrypted WhatsApp message. McAfee broke the hack news to Cybersecurity Ventures by phone, and followed with an email to us providing details... Read more »

Help!

This is a genuine request for help. I've put this off for a while, but here goes. I've poked about this in the past, but I'd like to try again. Please, serious responses only. This is too important.

I'm a software engineer. I have a vision.

I'm not a web developer. I am not in marketing. I'm no longer a salesperson.

Our brand presence is all but dead.

Our name is slowly disappearing due to brand ambiguity and forced disassociation. We have no consistent branding across our sites.

Heck, we don't even have a proper logo.

These are things that honestly, I'm no good at. I'm humbly asking that the community help us to establish a visually consistent brand that will leave a lasting impression, and reflect the raw ethos, power and mindset that is Solus.

I also ask that if anyone does offer anything forward (And seriously, love you if you do !!) - that this time it's of a license that we can actually use it to support and promote the project.

If you've been looking for a way to contribute to Solus, this is right now the single most important item for 1.2 that I personally cannot do myself. I don't have the skills. I'll make sure we deliver 1.2 on time, and it'll be awesome, but without the consistent brand experience, we're undermining all the hard work we've all put in.

I thank you in advance.

IT Consultant
Introduction
Summary

Having grown up in apartheid south africa on a smallholding on the outskirts of johannesburg I was witness to one of the most powerful changes of our time. My father was an entrepreneur and incredibly self sufficient, it was this that inspired me to follow my own dreams. I now run my own business, enabling others to use technology in a social context.

Having spent approximately 20 years in the IT business, I decided to change focus and move into a field that still uses technology but with a more human context. Social media is the most amazing way to engage with people and to leverage this in business is key to helping your customers.

One of the fundamental questions I ask myself regularly is, ‘why’? Why do we do what we do, why are we in business, why do we like to buy, etc. I apply this thinking when working with clients to develop a technology strategy.
