This week's Sierra Club hike on Thursday Septmber 15th is to Conness Lakes and Glacier, just outside Yosemite to the east, in the Inyo National Forest. Drive to Saddlebag Lake via Tioga Pass. Turn left from H-120 to Saddlebag Lake 2.1 miles east of the Tioga Pass entrance station.
This spectacular hike starts at 10,100 ft, goes around Saddlebag Lake, goes through the Harvey Monroe Hall Wetlands Research Area, to Greenstone and Wasco Lakes and on to Conness Lakes and the near...by Conness Glacier. The highest of the lakes exhibits the milky nature indicative of an active glacier next door.
Some of the hike is off trail, so hiking poles are advisable. One way distance is 3.2 miles and we reach an elevation of 10,561 for a 461 ft elevation gain. With ups & downs, we climb 1125 ft total. Then, back down and around Saddlebag again.
Caution -- This hike starts at high elevation -- Please be aware of the impact of elevation on hiking performance. Because of the elevation, consider this hike moderately strenuous.
Meet at 8 a.m. in Laveroni Community Park, Groveland to car pool. Pack lots of water and your lunch to eat at Conness Lakes. Optional ice cream on the way home. NOTE -- Due to the driving distance, return to Groveland will be around 6:00pm.
Reminder for hikers "down the hill", allow extra time for the Roberts Bridge

Thursday July 7th finds us again in Yosemite High Country. We will hike to May Lake (see photo) and then on to Raisin Lake from the May Lake trailhead off of the Tioga Road. May Lake is one of Yosemite's High Sierra Camps, set in a notch just below Mt Hoffman at about 8900 feet. Raisin Lake is over a slight ridge and down in a bowl just below May Lake.

This moderate hike is about 6 miles and has a cumulative elevation gain of about 1200 feet. If you are in need of a shorter hike, stop at May Lake and we will pick you up on the way back.

Bring your Lunch to dine at Raisin Lake.

Meet at Mary Laveroni Park in Groveland at 8am to carpool. And, at the trailhead at 9:45am-ish. Special time note -- as this hike is in the High Country, we will likely arrive back in Groveland about 5pm-ish.

No Dogs are allowed in the Yosemite designated wilderness area.

Sierra Club hike to Tenaya Canyon. Thursday 6/30!
This totally spectacular and moderate hike begins at the trailhead parking area for the Sunrise Lakes and Clouds Rest trails at the west end of Tenaya Lake in Yosemite's High Country along the Tioga Road
We walk about 1 mile towards Sunrise and then continue for another mile, off-trail, to the wide open section of Tenaya Canyon that consists of a ginormous granite slab, devoid of vegetation. The slab ascends more than a thousand feet to the crest of Clouds Rest. Our hiking route goes the other way and descends about 250 feet parallel to several cascades and pools as well as an alder and lodgepole pine flat, our turnaround location. There is a cool pool for wading at the turnaround as well as a great place for water sliding using Tenaya Creek and natures' waterslide. Total roundtrip distance is about 4.5 miles and 800 feet of elevation change.
This is a very different hike because of the amazing geology of the massive granite slab with its clearly visible glaciation from 12,000 years ago.
We cross Tenaya Creek at the beginning and on the way back. There is no bridge.Be prepared to wade across the shallow, yet gentle Tenaya Creek . It is recommended you bring a small towel and perhaps footwear tor crossing the Creek.
Hiking staffs are advised on this hike as much of the hiking is off-trail. Wear boots or running shoes with good soles for walking on sloping granite and carry snacks, water, etc in your day pack. Bring your Lunch to dine at the pool at the bottom of the canyon.
Meet at Mary Laveroni Park in Groveland at 8am to carpool. And, at the trailhead at 9:45am-ish.
No Dogs are allowed in the Yosemite designated wilderness area.
