Our guy Alasdair Allen dug into Google Beacon security:

You'd think that it would not be hard to find a service to search across multiple email (specifically gmail) accounts at once. And in fact there used to be products that did this. Most recently I used Greplin (which became Cue, which Apple bought), and then CloudMagic, which is pivoting to an email app company. Neither of them are available anymore. So what's a guy with a bunch of accounts supposed to do when he wants to search them all -- use a client app like Postbox?

I can finally announce my new job. I’m going to Yahoo. I’ll be editorial director of the new Yahoo Tech site, working with David Pogue, other great writers like Rob Pegoraro, Rob Walker, Deb Amlen, Dan Tynan, Alyssa Bereznak, and awesome editor Jason Gilbert. It’s an exciting opportunity to create great mainstream content about tech and I can’t wait to dig in. Wish me luck!

So states and local retailers got their way, and now Amazon has to charge state sales tax. But this is the unintended consequence: An all-out attack on local retail that turns Amazon's new liability into an asset.

Once Amazon had to charge sales tax, it had no reason not to open local distribution centers around the country, to take advantage of delivery efficiency. And now that it's running those distro centers, why not make them into freaking droneports?

If consumers can get what they want in less time than it takes to drive to the store, what happens to local retail shops and chains that the sales tax ruling was supposed to protect?

Bezos plays better chess.
