Oh goody! Another scientist biography to read.
Hidden Figure: Review of ‘The Forgotten Genius of Oliver Heaviside’ by Basil Mahon

"Not only did Heaviside understand the theory by reading through Maxwell’s immense treatise on the subject, it was he who first expressed it in the elegant mathematical form that we know today as Maxwell’s Equations. "

This could represent a tipping point for electric vehicles globally. As the article states, China represents the largest world market for new cars.
China is joining France and Britain in announcing plans to end sales of gasoline and diesel cars.

Under the proposed quotas, electric and hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles would have to make up 8 percent of each automaker's output next year, 10 percent in 2019 and 12 percent in 2020. Automakers that fail to meet their target could buy credits from competitors that have a surplus.

Beijing has ordered state-owned Chinese power companies to speed up installation of charging stations to increase the appeal of electrics.

Can someone point out to me where the RSS feed for the Science Advances table of contents is hiding?

Just rediscovered these. Much fun around the dinner table discussing them.

Much of our current analgesic pharmacopeia derives from compounds extracted from field-grown poppies. With this advance, the production of opioid painkillers could be more tightly controlled, reducing the leakage of poppy extracts into the black market.

Dr. House would certainly approve of the targets chosen: one of the opioids produced by the researchers was hydrocodone, which when blended with acetominophen is marketed as his pill of choice, Vicodin.

I can't wait to read the paper on this result. It is reasonable, I expect, to assume that the results have some limit of applicability due to the length scales that were sampled and that a larger interferometer with commensurately higher sensitivity might yield more information.
