Our discectomy procedure is a minimally invasive way to help treat the pain associated with a herniated or bulging disc by alleviating the pressure on the affected nerve. During the procedure, our surgeons will remove a portion of the herniated or bulging disc that is pressing on a nerve in the spinal cord. Our minimally invasive techniques allow our surgeons to remove the portion of the disc that is compressing the nerve without altering the stability of the spine.

Herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP), more commonly known as a herniated disc or slipped disc, is a common result of the natural aging process and occurs when a disc in the spine breaks open and leaks its gel-like center into the spinal canal.

Sciatica describes a collection of symptoms that can arise with sciatic nerve compression. This nerve is the largest and longest in the body, running from the base of the spine and down through both legs. Sciatic nerve compression can lead to pain that begins in the lower back and moves through the buttocks, legs and feet.

A prolapsed disc is a condition that is commonly referred to in several different ways, including a ruptured disc, a herniated disc and a slipped disc. All of these terms are used interchangeably to indicate that a portion of a disc’s gel-like nuclear material has leaked out into the spinal canal through a tear or split in the disc’s layered, cartilaginous outer wall.

Nerve impingement is among the most common causes of neck and back pain afflicting our patients here at Laser Spine Institute, and it is often caused by problems at the foramen (the gaps in the spine where nerves exit the spinal cord). A foraminotomy specifically helps to widen the foramen where nerves are pinched or compressed, which can help relieve the pressure placed on them and the associated pain.

A pinched nerve is a nerve under pressure. This pressure often comes from surrounding bone or soft tissues. A nerve under enough pressure will lose its ability to carry accurate signals, and its wayward signals can cause a variety of sensations in the body. For example, when a nerve is pinched or compressed, it can trigger the nerve to falsely signal pain. The compression also can limit the nerve’s ability to control the muscles it serves.
