What Dr Rhona Mahony didn’t say about medical care under the 8th amendment - This week, Dr Rhona Mahony came out in support of legalising abortion on broad ‘health’ grounds and claimed that the 8th amendment was preventing doctors from saving women’s lives or giving them the medical treatment they required. Bioethics commentator, David Mullins, eviscerated that claim in this excellent article in the Irish Catholic and which explains that she did not present all the facts about Irish medical practice – and he showed that guidelines from the HSE and the Institute for Obstetrics and Gynaecology obliged doctors to act to save mothers’ lives where a delivery of the baby was necessary. Read the article HERE or below False caricatures around care in pregnancy contribute nothing to a reasonable debate writes David Mullins Dr Rhona Mahony is Master of Dublin’s National Maternity Hospital at Holles Street. She is a vocal critic of the Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution which protects the right to life of unborn children. She has spoken f

Media ignores UN Committee which criticises abortion regime - We’re all well used to the Irish media approvingly reporting on pressure coming from UN Committees insisting that Ireland legalise abortion. (See Niamh Uí Bhriain’s article showing that no right to abortion exists in any UN charter here). The same media have conveniently ignored a recent report from a UN body – the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – which has sharply criticised Britain’s policy towards people with disabilities and the shocking abortion policy in particular. As Students for Life in TCD have pointed out on their excellent blog, the UN Committee wrote: “The Committee is concerned about perceptions in society stigmatizing persons with disabilities as living a life of less value and the termination of pregnancy at any stage on the basis of foetal impairment. The Committee recommends that the State party changes abortion law accordingly. Women’s rights to reproductive and sexual autonomy should be respected without legalizing selective abortions

Pro-life Activists express concern at Gardai seizing materials as referendum campaign hots up - Pro-life activists have said that they are gravely concerned about implications for a free and fair debate ahead of the expected abortion referendum after Gardai seized pro-life materials in Kilkenny City last Saturday. The Save the 8th pro-life roadshow was visiting the city on the last day of its extended tour, which had already been to 17 towns and cities throughout Ireland without incidence. However, just 10 minutes into the information event, Garda detectives arrived and threatened arrest if photographs of babies who had been aborted were not removed from display. “We had just set up our Life Boards, which are 8-sided wooden boards, and are used to display pro-life information, such as the development of the preborn baby, medical facts, support helplines for women with crisis pregnancy and some A4 photographs showing the reality of abortion. These displays are part of our educational outreach ahead of the referendum on the 8th, “ said Clare Molloy of Youth Defence.

Save the 8th Roadshow hugely encouraged by public support for pro-life message - SAVE THE 8TH ROADSHOW HUGELY ENCOURAGED BY PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR PRO-LIFE MESSAGE JUL. 15, 2017 Youth Defence volunteers has said they are hugely encouraged by the public support they’ve encountered for the message of the #SaveThe8th Roadshow this far, and that the tour is key to building pro-life support as the 8th amendment comes increasingly under threat. “We’re seeing that people are increasingly concerned that our pro-life provision in the Constitution might be repealed and abortion legalised, and they are asking why Ireland can’t continue to protect both mother and baby instead of killing preborn babies,” said activist Clare Molloy. Local pro-life activists are joining the Save the 8th roadshow in towns and cities throughout Ireland, as the nationwide tour travels the country in anticipation of a referendum on abortion next Spring. The pro-life tour, organised by Youth Defence, will reach 18 towns and cities from Donegal to Kerry, and aims to talk to tens of thous

This Save the 8th Rally for LIFE needs to be the best ever! - As you will know, a referendum on abortion is now likely in the next 12 months. That makes YOUR attendance at the Save the 8th Rally for Life on July 1st absolutely critical. We need you to show our government, and the country, that the pro-life movement are standing strong for life, and that we are a pro-life people who will defeat this push to legalise abortion in Ireland. The Rally for Life is always an amazing, colourful, celebration of Life, and it’s incredibly important message to SAVE the 8th must be heard loud and clear this year. The push to repeal the 8th – and the right to life of preborn babies – may have total media support and massive funds from abroad but the opinion polls already show that the Save the 8th campaign is having a real impact on public opinion and can succeed in protecting life. The Rally is a crucial part of showing the country why we must Save the 8th. Be part of it! Save the Date for July 1st!!
