'We all know that getting older is something we cannot change or avoid. We know that time will come when we just cannot move as fast as we did in our youth, and for some it may be in their 30's that they begin to feel some changes. But for most of us, it will be in our 40's that we notice many things that we just cannot do as easily as before.
People at this age are often the busiest they will ever be in their life and their stress is most likely to be at it's greatest. With so many responsibilities in their life to juggle, from raising young kids, to staying on top of busy careers and all the household chores that come with their lifestyle, it can be very easy to slip into bad health habits and not recognize the warning signs. Usually the first thing to get sacrificed on their list of things to do is exercise. At this age we also start to experience hormonal changes, and the damage from previous injuries in our youth begin to surface as chronic aches and pains. The things you could do to stay in shape when you were younger no longer work now.

So what exercises are best to do?

The answer is not to start trying to crush yourself with exercise. This will only lead to more problems. We have to be much smarter with our choice of exercise, and the volume of training. When you are over 40 the key is to start adding muscle and learn to move efficiently. Without weight training, your muscles will atrophy and lose mass. Loss of muscle mass apart from the damage to your joints and how you move also means a slower metabolic rate, resulting in more weight gain. This is how people at this age seem to gain weight quickly even though they have not changed how they eat. Their body has slowed down it's metabolic rate so you have to adjust your food choices and at the same time increase your muscle to speed the metabolism back up.'

This article discusses all the secrets to training if you are over 40, and provides many great examples of how to go about getting your health back.

For decades, fat and cholesterol have been demonized as culprits for cardiovascular disease and obesity. Only recently has the mainstream science and nutrition community started to recognize that fat isn’t the issue. Instead, as researchers are finding, an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and obesity is more closely linked to the consumption of processed foods, higher intake of carbohydrates, as well as poor lifestyle choices.
