Small Reading Group Conversations #2
As I wrote in my last post titled,  Small Reading Group Conversations , I have been giving my students in grades 7 and 6 time to engage in small group conversations about books and reading. The latest iteration of these small group conversations in grade 7 ...

It's the little things...
It's the little things that matter. The unsolicited hug from a student... who I think really hated me last year. The apology from a student for being late to class. She overheard me apologize to her classmate for rolling my eyes. I was frustrated; never acc...

No WiFi
Missed two days of writing. The WiFi in the hotel was not working when I needed it. So, I had to admit that I was going to miss slicing for two days. I had to let go. It's not about the prize. It's about the challenge. Pushing myself to write more. I am beh...

Here's a post I wrote a couple of days ago about my foray into #GeniusHour  with my grade 7 students. I'd love comments about any of the questions I pose. Thank you!

Genius Hour
Four weeks ago I implemented Genius Hour with my grade seven students. As is wont to happen when I implement something new in the classroom, I read and think about it a lot before I finally do it with my students. But, that doesn't necessarily mean I have a...

Small Reading Group Conversations
Source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/327073991664852654/      This year, I have spent too much time and energy trying to manage a silent 10 - 15 minute daily independent reading time in my grade 7 classroom. I haven't given up because I value independe...

Stuck, stuck, stuck
This Slice of Life March Challenge is not going well this year. I've had issues with internet connection. I haven't been able to keep up with my students' slices. I'm not finding small moments to write about every day. I'm experiencing what many of my stude...

A Sampling of Student's Slice of Life Stories
Yesterday I blogged about how students were resisting the Slice of Life Story Challenge this month. Today, after a full day at the #innovategraded conference in Sao Paulo, I opened up their Google docs and discovered a treasure trove of amazing slices. Plea...

Slice of Life - Take #1
I had a moment
of weakness today, and a revelation. I lost my
composure with my students. I was
desperately frustrated. Is there even such a thing? If there is, then that’s
what I was. I had a
grand plan: to ignite an explosion of writing in our class. I th...

My One Little Word - Confidence
My One Little Word (OWL) for 2015...drum roll, please...is..." confident "! I came about this word fairly quickly during the last two weeks of 2014. I started by making a list. The first word on that list was "confident". Then, came a stream of words and sh...

Queen for the Year
One of my 7th grade students loaned me a crown shortly after the Christmas break. I'm supposed to wear it for the rest of this school year. You see, I've been proclaimed the queen of our class by my students. I've promised to be the best teacher I can be an...
