Zak S. Again.

Our hobby, our spaces, our responsibility. That this will be JUST ANOTHER NOTCH in the belt of a man who has been doing this for a solid half a decade now is an indictment on all of us who allow it to continue, who excuse it, and who do nothing.

On Monday I was dead-named by Zak Sabbath aka Zak Smith, who also linked to old conversations that had my dead name and pronouns all over them for me to see. Dead naming transgender people is an act of transphobia and cissexism, whether it is done intentionally or otherwise. Trans people should not have to explain why this is wrong and they don't need the approval of cis men to feel this way. Spending a lifetime hearing the wrong name and pronouns inflicts lifelong trauma on trans people. Every time we see and hear those reminders of that trauma, we relive it. Cisgender people who inflict this trauma on trans people are committing a transphobic and cissexist act. That is not up for debate. However, Zak Sabbath and Christopher Mennell, who rose to his defense, were arguing that dead-naming me is not transphobic if I reveal myself what it was. A trans person who shares their dead name is doing so with the expectation that it will not be used by cis people, or shown to the trans person. This is an act of oppression. I will not tolerate cis men telling me that trauma inflicted on me is not transphobic or oppressive. They do not have the right to take away trans people's agency and voice to name our own oppression. That is not only a transphobic act as well, but also an attempt at erasure. This attempt became overt when Mr. Mennell decided to delete my confronting and naming of this transphobia. I messaged Mr. Mennell to explain this to him, and he could not accept responsibility. He has positioned himself as an "ally", but he refused to do the work. He refused to center marginalized voices and take them seriously. This is not the behavior of an ally, it is using our pain for his own agenda.

I can barely express how hurt and disappointed by Mr. Mennel I am. I thought he was not only an ally, but a friend. I tried to speak to him about this privately but he did not acknowledge what he did to defend transphobia and emotional abuse. This is an example of one person's failings, but he is not alone in this behavior. There are plenty of people, mostly cis men, who are willing to defend people like Zak and their continued abuse of marginalized people, and there is an entire hobby of people willing to ignore it or hand wave it away.

At this point, I am holding all of you responsible for letting hatred and abuse perpetuate. For accepting emotional abuse tactics like shifting blame, projection, gaslighting, and ridiculous claims that marginalized people are somehow equally guilty of harassing a cis white man who is defended by a cis hetero white supremacist apparatus that we have no access too. The willingness of this collective hobby to ignore these consistent and insistent claims of abuse from multiple marginalized individuals reveals this apparatus in all of it's ugly truth. Every single person in this hobby who benefits from this apparatus is complicit in it, and the abuse of marginalized people. It is up to you, not marginalized people, to educate yourself and other people of your complicity, and give everything you have to eradicating marginalization and abuse from our hobby. If you are not willing to put your fun, your privilege, your personal success on the line for us, you are not an ally, you are another oppressor. We don't need “allies” anymore, we need accomplices. We need people who actually fight. I'm not wasting anymore time and emotional energy trying to convince cis people that I'm worth fighting for. I'm done trying to fit into what cis people expect of me in order to avoid harassment from them. I'm done seeing and hearing this hate and indifference. Silence is violence.

I am leaving the G+ platform and social media almost completely. I am taking back my time and power. I am no longer giving away anything for free. I am moving on to create my own platform and space for trans and marginalized people and their accomplices. We have so much more to offer than what this community offers us. We are too talented for our success to rely on the approval and charity of cis men. We are too precious to be continually marginalized by this hobby. Trans is beautiful and I am no longer ashamed. I'm no longer afraid. I will own my own power and I hope other people in this hobby will do the same, in spite of being shown that we don't deserve it. Because we do deserve that, and so much more.

I know that there will be plenty of resistance to this. My credibility as a person will be questioned. My words and feelings scrutinized and refuted, even by “allies”. Plenty of people will continue to ignore this. I will be called a harasser for standing up against my own oppression. My transness will be called into question. Other trans people may be referenced to try to invalidate my pain. I will lose friends, “allies”, business, and more. And I will do nothing to stop it. I am done justifying my feelings, my life, to cis people. It's up to all of you to confront your own privilege now, I'm taking my beautiful and extraordinary self to a place where I can let those parts shine, not remain hidden. To my trans friends and our true accomplices, You know who you are and you know where to find me. To everyone else, put your privilege on the line and fight for us, because it's clear that nothing we try is working. It's up to you to change.

I will be back only to share links to a new blog and publishing company, made for and by trans people. This platform will not separate trans activism and voices from RPG content.

See you down the road, everyone. Hopefully it's a better place than where we are now.

Funny. Haven't posted on here in a long time, then Zak S mentions my name and all of a sudden my circles won't stop expanding.

So, lately people have finally begun talking about Zak S and his shitbaggery in public. This is a great thing! Maybe if we make how horrible is is public, people will stop ignoring it and we can keep him from harassing and abusing more people.

To do my part, I'm collecting all the different stories and blogs about Zak S I can find, and linking them all right here, for easy reference. If you have something to add, link it in the comments, and I'll throw it on the pile.

Here's a nice side-effect of print-on-demand publishing: if someone calls me out on my racist bullshit, I can agree, fix it, and ensure that that fix goes out to every purchase from that moment on, hopefully limiting the damage done. No wait for the warehouse to clear my insensitive (stupid even) text by distributing it further.

Yes this is a true story.

Native Americans objected to how Monte Cook Games portrayed them in an RPG. MCG apparently responded by totally snubbing them.

A while back I had an idea for a Golden Sky Stories setting in the American southwest. PCs would be things like spirits from Native American myths, UFO aliens, etc., and it would take place in a small town in the desert instead of rural Japan. But I very quickly realized that I couldn't possibly do it justice just from reading library books and Wikipedia articles. I'd still like to do it some day, but I'd need input from Native Americans from the region to make it work.

It took me over a decade of learning the Japanese language and culture to feel somewhat comfortable with making stuff based in Japan, and even then I tiptoe around things like religion.

People act like having someone get offended is an all-or-nothing proposition, when in reality it tends much towards the nothing end of things, even when it should be otherwise. I strongly suspect that Monte Cook Games is going to stay in business for many years to come, and Paula Deen isn't going to be begging for change any time soon. For me it's not about avoiding offense, but a combination of holding myself to a high standard as a creator and wanting the people I try to represent in my works to be happy with the results.

Even if we were to set aside issues like cultural appropriation (which we shouldn't), RPGs that try to portray another culture are too often just laughably bad at it. That's true even of portrayals of places like Ireland or Italy, much less anywhere in Asia or Africa. So yeah. Maybe we could try to do better at this stuff. It's right for games, and more importantly it's right for other human beings. The first step is to just actually listen.

I want you to take a good look at this url.

https://www.change.org/p/monte-cool-games-we-the-undersigned-demand-immediate-removal-of-thunder-plains-and-all-related-content-from-all-monte-cook-games-publications-current-and-future-and-request-an-immediate-public-apology-for-harm-done-regardless-of-supposed-intent-fro

Now what the hell happened here? Well, the usual RPG discourse of excusing racist things and cultural misrepresentation as being okay for X or Y in-setting reasons and then blocking people because they were "just outraged" when they presented any kind of counterargument kind of hit an immovable object this time.

Hi, I’m Dennis or wyattsalazar, author of The Solstice War, an ongoing serial fiction published on the web for free. It is a story of identity and ideology, set in a fantasy world inspired by the events of the Second World War, particularly the Eastern Front, and featuring primarily queer characters, women, and characters of color.

It’s been my dream to be able to work on a project like this full-time, that is diverse and interesting, but unfortunately that dream has suffered recent setbacks. In the short term, I’m fine, but the clock is ticking in a bad way, and I’m not sure where I’ll be in the coming months. I just wanted to draw attention to this, my Patreon page.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could consider a recurring contribution to the project. I charge on a per-chapter basis, so if you pledge $1, you’ll be giving $2 monthly (because I exclusively publish 2 chapters a month, and no more than that), and that’s honestly a massive help at the moment. I would be set for sure if every follower I have pledged $1, but I know that’s unrealistic, especially if you don’t enjoy the story. I’m not looking for huge short-term donations — just a little bit of help every month to keep me afloat in these tough times.

Thank you for your time and patience and please give these links a look.
