Bobby Lazzara, MD summarizes findings from a meta-analysis of 16 studies looking at the association between apathy in older individuals with and without incident dementia. The importance of this study is that relevant, inexpensive, and easily implementable approaches to treating apathy may influence patients at risk for dementia.

Within the past few years, efforts to establish whether there is truly a connection between headaches and variables in weather have moved away from looking at pooled data, and instead, towards subgroup analysis. Recent studies that show a correlation between headaches and weather changes reveal that only a subgroup of people who have headaches experience weather-influenced pain.

Migraine: Putting TIA and Acute Ischemic Stroke in Perspective

People admitted to the hospital for migraine with aura have over two times increased risk for later readmission for transient ischemic attack (TIA). Sometimes called “mini-stroke,” a TIA occurs when blood flow to the brain is briefly interrupted without causing permanent neurological damage. TIAs can increase the risk for later stroke. A study found that people admitted with severe migraine that does not respond to medication (status migrainosus) may have almost five times increased risk of later readmission for subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), or bleeding into the space around the brain. http://ow.ly/IHOA30ljNKc

A new study has found that an RNA-binding protein called TDP-43 could be a promising new biomarker for diagnosing amyotropic lateral sclerosis. Accumulation of TDP-43 represents the most significant pathological finding in about 95% of ALS and 50% of FTD patients. Transformation and aggregation of TDP-43 in these diseases causes widespread neurotoxicity. http://ow.ly/dwLa30l7yTj #ALS #neurology
