While having a young child count calories might be over the top, teaching them to read lables is another matter. My 8 year grandson knows that if there is something in a supermarket he wants, he first checks to ensure first ingredient isn't sugar, that there are too many ingriedients and there isn't any partially hydrogenated corn oil (PHCO). It's a kick seeing him read labels in the supermarket and proclaim, "Darn, it has PHCO in it, I can't buy it."
