Topsail Rush

So this is the 5th image in "The Rush Series". It might be the last...a good series has an odd number of images...and while I am really happy with the other images in the series...this one is my favorite. It all came together on the last sunrise of 2016, shooting on Topsail Beach with my dad. Not sure I could have asked for much more. When the image first came up on the LCD, I know I giggled like a little kid on Christmas Morning...

I started editing that morning, and spent 2 hours removing dust spots...it seems that when I changed lenses the day before, I got a bunch of dust on the sensor...over 200 dust spots later, I could start the real editing.

I finished it up last night...might be the right image to end the series on a high note.

The Grand Finale

I have neglected this platform this year...and now that G+ has forced everyone onto the newest platform...it will be a struggle...but I need to not neglect this outlet...

This is an image from a couple weekends ago, I had the pleasure of leading the Fall Color Photo Shoot for the North Georgia Photography Club. On the last day, I got to show them around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of my favorite places in the country. We were treated to an awesome sunrise on Sparks Lane...our hike in was rewarded.

Carolina Rush

I have this thing for fishing piers...I don't know if anyone noticed...the older, wooden variety in particular. I have photographed these piers up and down the east coast, and never get tired of it. Every visit is different, and I can always come away with a new image. I have lofty ideas of doing a book about them some day.

I am going to miss my regular trips to Carolina Beach, NC...my work there is nearing completion. There are two fishing piers within 3 miles of my project there, and I have spent quite a few mornings and evenings with these two piers. This image is one from last month, I decided to finish the edit on it this weekend. The combination of the softer, subtle color in the sky with the rush of the waves hitting the beach appealed to me.

The Edge of Darkness

Out on the Rock Jetty near the Ferry Terminal on the South End of Fort Fisher, the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean. This Rock Jetty known as "The Rocks" was built in the late 1800's by the Army Corp of Engineers. I only recently learned of it from a local in Carolina Beach. This was my second time shooting here. Storms were rolling in, the skies were changing and shifting, I thought it would be a good spot for a dramatic long exposure image. I got so wrapped up in the long exposure, that I nearly got wrapped up by the tide which would have left me stranded out there several hundred yards from shore. I am happy to report I got out, and I got my image along with a few lacerations on my feet. But I got out. I hope you enjoy.

Coquina Milky Way

There are concepts for images that sometimes sit in my head forever, and never get realized. When mother nature is involved, well, she makes it hard to capture a special moment.

Case in point, the Milky Way over the Coquina outcropping in Fort Fisher, NC. Nearly two years of travel to this area, and the conditions have never lined up to make this image possible. On the nights of little to no moon, either the tide was too high, or typically the weather was bad and the skies were not clear. On the rare clear night, it was usually a full moon, obscuring the Milky Way.

But not last week...last week, it all lined up. A late rising moon, an early rising Milky Way, clear skies and low tide...it happened, and I could not pass up the chance to shoot this spot. The rocks covered by a lot more sand than the last time I was here, leaving only the tallest points visible. They made a nice foreground element that didn't take too much away from the Milky Way high in the sky.

Point Atkinson Lighthouse

A 2 Minute Exposure using just a Lee Big Stopper during Sunset at Point Atkinson Lighthouse at the end of Lighthouse Park on the West End of West Vancouver. My favorite image of the trip, and one of my favorite of 2016. This kind of landscape just doesn't exist where I live...I had such a good time working the shoreline.

Last Light at Lighthouse Park

This image was literally the last image of the trip to Seattle/Vancouver. The last night in Vancouver we went over to Lighthouse Park. I could have gone there everyday, I loved it. So many things to point a camera at. I had been shooting sunset over the Lighthouse, and as I was getting ready to pack up, I turned around to face West Vancouver and the light over the mountains after the sun dipped below the horizon, was too good to pass up. The clouds over West Vancouver lit up as they caught the last of the suns light for the day. A long exposure removed the texture of the water allowing the glow to be reflected on the now smooth water surface. Hanging out on the rocks for the evening was a perfect way to end the trip...and already has me wanting to go back.

Kure Beach Fishing Pier
June 29, 2016

I had to step away from the work for a while last night while here in Carolina Beach, NC. The surf and skies were calling my name, and I had to get out...After two days of storms and rain showers the clouds opened up at sunset and the light show was awesome. It felt great to get out there and get my feet wet. It re-charged my battery.

Cosmic Frisco

Probably my favorite image from my recent trip to the Outer Banks.  It was not the image I was focused on getting, but it was the same location.  After shooting from the west side of the pier, I wandered over to the east side and really liked what I saw.
