Mad Max Fury Road (2015)
By the time you read this you'll probably have seen Mad Max Fury Road , George Miller's astounding return to the franchise he gave creative life to in 1979. And if you haven't… for once believe the hype.To echo the plaudits, MMFR is a huge, tattooed and sca...

Django Unchained (2012)
Quentin Tarantino has his peccadilloes and they are, in no particular order: guns, obscure film history (especially those involving martial arts) and dialogue.  Lots of dialogue.  If there's a downside to Tarantino's latest, Django Unchained , it's that thi...

By 1977 English art-pop perfectionists, 10cc, were in crisis. Actually, they weren’t just in a crisis, they were fucked . The only thing was: they didn’t know it.  Famously 10cc were born from the ashes of nascent careers writing hits for the Hollies and Ya...

Daevid Allen (1938-2015)
So farewell then, Daevid Allen, the one, the only real Pot Head Pixie. Since Kevin Ayers passed away a few years ago, this leaves only two original members of The Soft Machine - the ‘Canterbury scene’’s most important band - left alive. And more importantly...

I was beginning to fear that Jones was not dying but dead. This blog, happily proves otherwise. Thank God!

I have no idea what is going on, but please phone or email, so that we can achieve a happy resolution. If someone has messed up (don't know if they have or not), fine, we can all deal. But what are we meant to read into the current situation?

Ex Machina (2014)

The Duke Of Burgundy (2014)
One of the natural by-products of a post-feminist world for
old codgers like myself who did most of their ‘growing up’ in the ‘70s and ‘80s
is that you often end up watching a film and not being sure if you’re even allowed to enjoy it. Remember that

Of monsters and men: Nightcrawler ( 2014), The Babadook (2014), Mr Turner (2014)
I recently mentioned on this blog that the year 2014 didn't really seem to have offered up too many film highlights, yet looking back I've realised that I was being my usual half-empty self, and that maybe I've been a bit hasty. For instance: 2014 did at le...

Good grief... it's no wonder that British hotels have such a terrible reputation with dumps like this around. I can only think that the AA rating is based purely on the fact that it was at least clean. Starting with the frostiest welcome imaginable, it all went downhill from there. Neolithic practices such as a 8-9.30am breakfast slot and a 10am (yes, 10am!!!) checkout time reinforce the joylessness of what is ostensibly a HOLIDAY destination. The room had the number written on it in felt tip. The 'seaview' was acheived by lening out of the window. The TV remote (lovingly velcroed to the TV) did not work. A reading strip light above the bed burned the back of my head. No shampoo in the bathroom. And the soap was Holiday Inn branded, so obviously pilfered. A hateful, sinfully overpriced experience. Avoid at all costs.
