TOMORROW (Friday) 6pm

This month we will have two short talks plus a couple of lightning talks!

Our first short talk will be Reuse or Recycle Your Old Computer by Tom Worthington.
Computers and mobile devices become obsolete much quicker than other consumer products, such as refrigerators and cars. Electronic equipment can contain toxic and valuable materials which should not be simply put into landfill. Before you buy a new computer, tablet or phone, look at the options of what to do with the old one.
Tom is the author of the free ebook "ICT Sustainability: Assessment and Strategies for a Low Carbon Future" and teaches an on-line course in ICT sustainability which starts at the Australian National University in mid-February.

Our second short talk will be Subuser with Docker by Robert Smit.
Docker update and subuser a tool using Docker to isolate/sandbox your ever day applications. Why should Firefox have access to any other folder other than downloads directory.

There will also be a couple of lightning talks on the night; if you have something you want to share, something you found or used or wrote for Linux, or a question you would like to ask, please do put your name up on the board toward the beginning of the meeting.

Transit and parking info: The Google office is the big black building marked "Accenture" opposite Star City Casino Pirrama Road facade.
- If using the trains, you can go either get off at; (a) Town Hall station, head towards Darling Harbour, walk across the Pyrmont footbridge and then follow Pirrama Road towards Star city; or at (b) Central station, then take the light rail to Star City.
- If using the light rail, get off at Star City station and walk across the street.
- If using the buses, the route 443 stops right out front of the building.
- If you drive, then you can look for parking on the suburban streets around the office (or pay for parking at the Casino), and then walk from there.

TODAY 6pm

We will have a double talk, Game Development by Daryl Petty.

It is an exciting time for Gaming on Linux, with the gaming giant Valve supporting development and bringing Linux to the living room with SteamOS. The combination of open-source software and hardware could create a revolution in gaming with developers creating their own input-devices to replace traditional controllers, the mouse and keyboard. There will be a brief introduction to some the programming libraries and tools people will be using within the Linux environment. The second half of the talk will be a beginner-friendly tutorial on the Blender Game Engine. I will include a fool-proof guide to getting started with either, listing the you-tube videos and books that you can use to get started developing games immediately.

Daryl is an Open-Source/Linux enthusiast with an extensive background in Illustration and 3D modeling, for the past year he has focused himself on learning programming languages, developing small games with C++, or with Python in the Blender Game Engine.

TOMORROW!

In December, we will not have a meeting — instead, we'll have a Penguin Picnic! An afternoon in the park with fellow Linux enthusiasts...

BYO everything — food, salads and good cheer!

Location: BBQ4 Olympic Park in Bicentennial Park, Homebush.

Getting there

There is plenty of parking if coming by car. It's the first parking area on Bicentennial Drive.

If using trains, you can get off at either Olympic Park or Concord West; either way it's about 15 minutes' walk.

From Olympic Park, walk south-west along Australia Avenue, then turn left into Bicentennial Park Drive (just before you get to the road interchange). First BBQ on the left, about 200m.

From Concord West, walk west along Victoria Avenue, under the main road and across the creek. Head south to Bicentennial Park. The BBQ area is just south of the cafe.

We may have a car run from Strathfield Station; please let us know in the comments if you'd like to be picked up there.

SLUG meeting TONIGHT 6pm in Pyrmont

Our main talk will be Upgrade a car stereo to Linux and Raspberry-Pi by David Lyon.

Recently I have been upgrading my old CD-ROM car stereo to Linux. What I will show is how to take a typical 80s/90s/00s CD-ROM car stereo and upgrade it to Linux with a Raspberry-Pi. I will show how to remove what's no longer needed, how to install the linux processor board and how to connect the power and audio system. Then power-up and start using. It's real Linux hacking.

As usual, there will also be lightning talks on the night; if you have something you want to share, something you found or used or wrote for Linux, please do put your name up on the board toward the beginning of the meeting.
