Charity urgently appeals for volunteers to help 'drive away loneliness' among older people in Poole

Contact The ElderlyContact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is urgently appealing for volunteers living in Poole to spare just a few hours each month to drive one or two older people to a local tea party - and enjoy a cuppa and a cake themselves!

The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities – providing a regular and vital friendship link every month.

Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and taken to a host’s home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship.

Contact the Elderly’s National Volunteer Support Officer Development Officer, Suzan Hyland, said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people. Anyone who can spare a couple of hours one Sunday a month, has a driving licence, a car, and a capacity for drinking tea, is eligible to volunteer! It’s not a big commitment, and our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.”

Poole residents interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly as a driver once a month can contact Suzan Hyland, National Volunteer Support Officer on 020 7881 2361 or email suzan.hyland@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

Poole Harbour Commissioners launch Poole Harbour Boat Show

Poole Quay Boat HavenIn 2015, Poole will host its own dedicated boat show on the weekend of May 9 and 10 organised and operated by Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC).

The free public event will take place on Poole Quay, and at PHC’s award-wining marina Poole Quay Boat Haven, and will incorporate a variety of marine-related businesses, family focused entertainment and other elements associated with a regional boat show. Inspired by other boat shows in areas such as Jersey, PHC believe Poole is a perfect location for an all-encompassing boat show celebrating the rich and varied boating business present in the town.

Jim Stewart, Poole Harbour Commissioner’s chief executive is pleased to announce the new event for 2015. He says: “From local chandlers to rig makers and other marine-focused suppliers, we hope the Poole Harbour Boat Show will become a staple date on the regional maritime calendar. It is an opportunity for all Poole marine operators to come together and showcase the extent of work going on across the Harbour.

“As we head towards 2017 and Poole’s hosting of European Maritime Day, the new boat show enables us to highlight the many varied businesses within the marine sector here. We aim for it to grow year on year and to maintain its full inclusivity to all.”

Businesses in the marine sector are invited to take stands at the show, which has the full support and backing of the British Marine Federation (BMF) and organisations such as the RNLI will be playing a key role across the weekend. The event is also supported by Poole Tourism which will include the show in its annual events programme and has scheduled the dates in May to co-ordinate around other summer events.

For information regarding stand space and opportunities to get involved with the inaugural show, please contact John Binder at Poole Quay Boat Haven on 01202 649488.
