The Ugly Cake company started life at Doctor Coffee's Cafe in Darlington in 2010, as the antidote to the consistently beautiful, almost unreal cupcakes the cafe also stocked.
These home made cakes taste delicious but tend to look awful. Icing looks as though it is applied with a trowel, loaves mushroom our of their tin layer cakes look like marble cakes and marble cakes just splurge. But if you think beauty is in the eye of the eater, Ugly Cakes are for you!
I try to use locally sourced ingredients as far as possible, and with advanced warning I can offer gluten, lactose or nut free cakes too. I can supply local cafes on request, or take one-off orders from anyone who fancies!
Cupcakes, layer cakes, sponge cakes, fruit cakes, loaf cakes, mini cakes, GIANT cakes, biscuits, cookies, bars, slices, tarts, puddings and pastries are all made in deliciously Ugly splendor. The range is not just limited to cakes though! I also make Uglyscones, UglyBread, UglyPies, UglyQuiches and UglyPasties and other savoury baking.
A large part of the UglyCake ethos is about enjoying cooking. As such, I am a great believer in teaching children to cook from an early age so that they can really enjoy their food when they're older. My daughter (not yet 2) is already quite at home in the kitchen. In the near future, I aim to start children's cooking classes as well so everyone can join in making UglyCakes!
Additionally, many of my UglyCake recipes feature in my book, Ugly Cooking with Reckless Abandon, available online from the link below
Some Reviews of the Ugly Cakes:
"It's too orangy for crows!"
"Did you make that?"
"But it looks like a cake!!"
"Bel, you have surpassed yourself with that one. Did you stand 6 feet away and just chuck the icing on?"
