Does anybody still use this? There are times when I'd quite like to put all of Facebook's idiocy and Twitter's trollishness on the back burner and find somewhere that has a higher ratio of sensible people.

I took the girls for a day out on the Severn Valley Railway. It was one of their open days, so we got to see behind the scenes as well.

Given that Google had  now also removed the ability to override this setting, the best current solution is this extension:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/new-tab-reloaded/jliilhbdldnjbdbpajaakhpjpahnopbn

Some people are reporting that it doesn't work; if that's the case for you then check your search engine settings. Google has multiple country variants, and if you switch to any of them then the Instant Extended API picks that up and puts a search box for it on your new tab page. But the extension only works if you leave your search engine set to your installation default. It will be the one in the search engine dropdown that is just called "Google", rather than "google.co.uk", "google.com", etc.
