Sorcery
Martin's Beach, CA

A truly epic burning sunset provided the perfect backdrop to a beautiful evening by the beach. Complete with textured clouds and virga, this evening ranks among the top sunsets I've witnessed.

Sunshine with Showers

When the sunflowers bloom, clear skies typically accompany them. However an odd monsoonal system took a westerly foray into California to produce this amazing sunset over this sunflower field. While shooting this westerly scene, a giant double rainbow sprung up behind me at sunset. Good times with great company.

First of Dawn
San Francisco, CA

On the rare occasion I witness one of those sunrises so amazing it continues to resonate in my memory. About a week ago the edge of a storm made landfall just before sunrise and produced a stellar light show. The clouds had volume and had mammatus-like textures. It was surely a morning worthy of waking up and making the trek down to Kirby Cove.

Towering sandstone walls, dimpled slick rock, autumn colors, and cascading water combine to form this desert paradise.

City in the Clouds
San Francisco, CA

Here is something a bit different of a recent low fog event in San Francisco. As the sun was rising I pointed my camera over to the city skyline as it played hide and seek with the fog. When the first sunlight struck the fog the tips of the skyscrapers were exposed creating a dreamy scene.

Inner Sanctum
Lower Antelope Canyon, AZ

Having walked by this scene multiple times I finally made it a point to photograph it on a recent trip to this canyon. Since we were some of the first people into the canyon, I enjoyed quite some time alone with this composition watching the glow appear at the end of the water sculpted hallway lined with Navajo sandstone fins.

Kaleidoscope
Painted Desert, AZ

Upon first look, this may look like peeling paint off a wall or possibly chocolate art, but is actually cracked mud along a wash in the Painted Desert. Scorching temperatures rapidly dried wet mud in the Painted Desert area causing the ground to crack and layers to roll to create this amazing set of cracked mud tiles.

Tower Guard
Mono Lake, CA

Along the shores of Mono Lake stand these odd but absolutely stunning sand tufas formed when the water level was much higher. Resembling intricate castles, I came here for sunrise hoping to catch some light as a storm system rolled through the eastern sierras.

Desert Mural
Painted Desert, AZ

During a recent SW trip, I ventured out to the northern end of the Painted Desert. Here the hills are composed of banded colors formed from the Triassic chinle formation of various sediments layering over millions of years. Shortly after sunset, the hills come alive as soft light strikes the surface causing the colors to glow.

Frozen in Time
Abraham Lake
Kootenay Plains, Canada

The suspended bubbles of Abraham Lake are one of the coolest things to see in the Canadian Rockies. Plant life at the bottom of the lake release methane that becomes trapped pancake bubbles as the lake freezes.
