I've now gotten three different google+ IDs -- this one, plus one for my domain that I moved to google when spam overwhelmed my mailhost, and my work one. I'd really like a way to have these mixed into one feed so I don't have to remember to log into accounts in the right order so the one I really use use works...

Awesomeness
Chemistry Crayon labels

Children play and draw with crayons practically every day, so why not make the experience more educational? This listing is for a set of 120 labels to stick in the crayons in a basic 120 pack of crayons so that while children are coloring, they are also exposed to the names of chemicals that will make those colors! So instead of thinking "I want green" they will think "I want Barium Nitrate Ba(NO3)2 Flame" and then when they take chemistry in high school and their teacher sets some gas on fire and it makes a green color and they ask the class what chemical it was your student will know it was Barium! Genius!

UW-IT's annual report hot off the [virtual] presses.

I have two-part toilets with a Tank and Bowl separated by a rubber gasket. Most people have this arrangement since single-piece ones are expensive and fragile to ship. Anyway, it;s a bad idea to put cleaning products into the tank because it can damage the seal between the two, and once you get seepage you now have cleaning products trapped and it continues to eat away at the seal.

If you get this you may be tempted to tightening the bolts to compress the seal. this is a bad idea. a new seal is only a couple of dollars, easily obtained and replaced. Tightening the bolts may fix the problem today, but it stores up trouble for the future. If you over-tighten the bolts you can put cracks in the tank, or worse the bowl. If anyone leans against the tank the (now) rigid connection put stresses on the tank around the bolt-holes and may crack it. When cold water floods into the tank the change in temperature stresses the tank, and may crack it. You get the idea: at some point someone will end up on having to replace the tank. if you can, replace the seal.

The tank on my toilets (they are identical) is now discontinued. Fortunately I managed to find an on-line store that had an old tank and I had one shipped from Maryland (this is crazy folks!). replacing the tank is only a little more complicated than replacing a fill valve (but a lot more expensive).

The important things to remember are: level the tank and do not over-tighten the bolts, you should have enough play on the tank that it 'gives' if someone leans against it, about 5mm should be enough

I am looking for an intelligent heating control system for my house. I have six thermostats that detect temperature and turn on the heat-exchangers in six rooms of my house. These make use of hot water that is circulated around using a timer regardless of the internal or external temperature of the house. There are no signal cables, only a 120vac supply to each thermostat/heat exchanger. the possibility of sensing the temperature of the water being circulated around the system. The system should be able to be made quite efficient but the necessary off-the-shelf components are eluding me since I was thinking of how to avoid building seven jeenodes+power supplies+power controllers+temperature senors and a master control computer.

Central Texas wildfires. We saw this shot from Loop 360, showing the Bastrop fires behind the Austin skyline. Every direction we drove had smoke in the distance. Nine-year-old Elizabeth said, "It needs to rain or the whole world will be on fire." Indeed.
