Hi Scotty! Is my mechanic conning me? My new to me 2006 Honda Element with 118,000 miles started acting up: When you turned the key the first time nothing would happen, the the second time it started. This happened a few times, then it wouldn’t start the first two times. Then, the first three.

A couple of weeks later the car just didn't start at all. The starter didn't even crank the engine. The horn and lights worked perfectly so the battery was fine. Took it to my mechanic and told him I though it was the immobiliser key, but he diagnosed a faulty starter. When he replaced it, the engine started cranking, but the car still wouldn't start. After many tests he decided to trailer the car to the Honda dealer. The diagnosed a bad ECM ($$$$$). They replaced it and the car started fine. But then the mechanic calls me and says that the car starts and runs but that the idling valve is faulty… so he replaced it as well. Now I’m out of $2,100 and the car is fine.

So what’d you think? Am I being conned?
