Lake County Forest Preserve District officials want visitors to have a better experience when nature calls. The district will be replacing 10 toilet structures that are 20 or more years old with odor-reducing "evaporator" facilities at the Greenbelt, Half Day, Old School and Van Patten Woods forest preserves. "If it's functioning correctly, there's no smell inside whatsoever," Biological Mediation Systems LLC President Glenn Rachak said.

A fingerprint from a plastic bag wrapped over the head of a murdered Palatine teen led authorities to a Northwest suburban man charged as her killer 17 years later, Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said today. James P. Mary Amici-Kozi doesn't get the spotlight much, but her work sure does. The graphic artist at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin creates displays both large and small that complement the themes or events happening in the library. "We are always changing, always coming up with new ideas," she says. "You want to give as much as you can. You want to be as creative as you can. I like to see how much the public enjoys things that touch them."

Dave Raub has run the same exact six-mile route through Arlington Heights most every day for 31 years. Thursday’s weather was less than ideal. “My wet hands were stinging and actually hurting from the cold, so I tucked them into the sleeves of my jacket for most of the route,” said Raub, who doesn’t wear waterproofed clothes, gloves or shoes when running in the rain.
