New encouraging treatment for melanoma cancer for President Carter
Former president Jimmy Carter, who announced Thursday he has melanoma that had spread to his liver and brain, is being treated with two cutting-edge therapies that offer new hope to the 76,000 Americans diagnosed annually with this type of cancer. Carter, 90, explained in a news conference at the Carter Center in Atlanta that melanoma — most commonly occurring as skin cancer, but which can also cause internal tumors — had formed a mass in his liv...

For me it is the greatest recorded performance of the Liebestod ever, and I mean EVER!

The ever amazing Magda Olivero died yesterday at the age of 104. Here is a recording of her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1975 at the age of 64 singing Tosca -- in the slowest "Vissi d'arte" I have ever heard. Her breath control astonishing, and the audience reaction tremendous.

Let the truth be known
On Feb. 23, 1945, an American flag was raised over the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, and AP photographer Joe Rosenthal was there to capture the now-iconic moment. In Rosenthal's famous photo -- which served as the model for a massive bronze statue ...

The rôle of Baby Doe belonged to her and was one of the great operatic performances of the century.

I love this store -- not only does it have an amazing inventory or storage and home items, the staff are so friendly, polite, and helpful. I sometimes just drop in to see what is new. Great place!

Total satisfaction: friendly, polite, no pressure or hard sell, they listened to what I wanted and responded with the right car. I recommend this dealership over all the seven I visited. I particularly want single out Mike Shirf in sales, Robert Piggie in finance, and Colton Baker who made everything simple and easy.

I have eaten here a dozen times and always with a reservation beforehand, since it can be very busy on days when the weather is nice. At all times I have enjoyed the hospitality of the staff and the cuisine. The menu is small, but there is a choice of meat, fish, vegetables - something for everyone. The wine list is of local wines mostly. The view and environs are beautiful.

The cathedral is most impressive in architecture and its artistic contents, and it requires at least 2 trips to appreciate it fully. The Correggio paintings are difficult to see, but if you have brought some 1 Euro coins you can illuminate them easily for about 3 minutes each -- not bad to get 3 great works of art for 1 Euro! The campanile was closed for extensive repairs during my stay in Parma.

Fausto the owner closed two restaurants in Rome to open this one because he "loves Malta too much." On the front door are two signs: "Pull - and if that doesn't work - PUSH - and if that doesn't work - we're closed" and "Keep calm and Eat Carbonara." And his spaghetti carbonara is definitely worth eating, as is the saltimbocca and several other Roman dishes I saw but didn't have room to consume. The Tiramisu is a knockout. This is a MUST in Valletta and Malta.

The very best thing about The Yeatman is the view you get of Porto across the from your room and terrace -- I think every room has one. Otherwise, the hotel does not live up to what I expected and is only above average in its restaurant and service. The rooms are a nice size, but aren't all that "traveler friendly" -- e.g., no drawers to store your clothes. I thought the Michelin starred restaurant was very disappointing and chose to eat in local restaurants riverside for Portuguese cuisine. The walk from my room to the elevators was the length of 3 football fields. The gardens are lovely and the pool very nice, but the gym was disappointing. I didn't take advantage of the spa facilities. The staff was friendly, but clearly a training staff, both very young and inexperienced.

A typical Parma trattoria, but with a personal touch. There are daily specials, today it was tagliatelle with porcini and a penne with broccoli. I had an a la carte meal of a plate of salumeria, 2 kinds of ham, salami followed by a grilled tender steak. Dessert was a chocolate cake with pear. All was excellent. The manager/owner is the waiter and it can become very busy, so be patient and expect a long slow lunch. This works well, since most museums and churches are closed between 12:00 and 3:00pm.
