SNOOKER ACE MURPHY SWAPS POTTING FOR PUTTING AT ELY CITY GOLF CLUB
TOP snooker star Shaun Murphy traded his cue for clubs as he swung by Ely City Golf Club at the start of this week.
Murphy is the reigning Masters champion and a former World champion, having been at the top of his sport for the past decade.
As the son of a golf professional, in the summer months he swaps potting for putting. And Murphy put his five-handicap to the test at Ely City where he played with club member Tony Rushmer, his long-term PR advisor.
Murphy showed a deft touch on the greens, burying long-range putts in the same easy style that he sinks blacks on the green baize.
He said: “It is the first time I have visited Ely and it seems a lovely city. I certainly really enjoyed the golf course.
“It is in excellent condition and presented a really good test of golf. I was made to feel very welcome by everyone off the course as well and look forward to returning in the not-too-distant future.”
Last month Murphy completed the most consistent season of his career to date. He landed three titles before just losing out in an epic World Championship final with Stuart Bingham at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Murphy is due to commence a new campaign at the end of the month, competing in the Australian Goldfields Open in the state of Victoria.
He added: “I am very much looking forward to the new season but hopefully there will be time for a few more games of golf before the summer finishes.”

On a warm, sunny late September Friday, Ely’s Captains’ Charity Day was wonderfully supported with a saturated course of 23 teams in a shotgun start. All departments of the Club, (office, greens staff, food and beverage and Pro shop) excelled in staging a great day enjoyed by club members and 6 visiting teams. The team winners were Mark Smith, Peter Webster, Les Nuttall and Phil Hunter. Other highlights of the day were Vice Captain, Mick Munnelly’s shamrock trousers and a hole-in-one on the 2nd by Hunstanton member, David “Bingo” Bingham. Members’ wallets and purses were wrung dry in expert fashion by auctioneer Les Nuttall, to record an admirable profit on the day for the East Anglian Ambulance charity of just under £5000.
A huge vote of thanks is extended from Captains Dave and Binnie to all the club members who participated by contributing, helping or playing on the day.

CONGRATULATIONS to Captain Luke Ryan’s Goddard Cup team who beat fancied Elton Furze 7–5 in the semi-final of the prestigious CAGU competition at Ely on Sunday, 17th August.

In the afternoon’s singles, Ely’s 1st four players each recorded convincing wins. Needing only another half point to secure victory, it was left to our final player, Mark Smith to produce the result of the day by beating the opposition’s county star 5&4!

A large number of members and guests gathered at Ely City Golf Club on Sunday afternoon to witness the first ever “Captain’s Bake Off”. A magnificent sum of £650 was raised for the Club’s charity this year, the East Anglia Air Ambulance. The event was hosted by the Men’s Captain, Dr Dave Woods who complimented the 20 male bakers on the exceptional standard and quality of their efforts. After a cream tea and culinary quiz, the cakes were enthusiastically auctioned by last year’s Men’s Captain, Philip Ambrose. Competition amongst the baking male golfers was intense, but the unanimous winning entry was a fabulous Fraisier cake, produced by Club member, Dr Greg Davidson.
