CarPlay is awesome!
I’ve been enjoying the CarPlay experience in my vehicle for several months. I was fortunate to get my hands on one of the first available Alpine iLX-007. In one word, amazing. I absolutely love this system.

For anyone who does not know what CarPlay is, I’ll give you the basics.

CarPlay is a platform designed by Apple. Its main purpose is to create a smarter and safer driving experience while allowing you access to some of your iPhone’s basic functions. iPhone supported with CarPlay are the iPhone 5, iPhone5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 plus, iPhone 6s plus and the iPhone SE. The iPhone is physically connected to the CarPlay stereo system using a lightning to USB cable. When connected, the iPhone’s display is disable and displays the Apple CarPlay logo.

Phone: This interface is very simple. Big green button to answer a call or big red button to hang up. Call display lets you know who’s calling. That’s basically it. Clean, simple, no distractions. You can ask Siri to call anyone in you address book, or ask Siri to dial any number you dictate to it.

Messages: This is where CarPlay makes it much safer to use. When you receive a text message, you receive a notification. Selecting it allows Siri to read the message to you. The message itself is not available to be read on screen, keeping your eyes on the road. if you wish to respond, Siri will allow you to dictate a reply, not type it. Siri will also read it out loud to confirm the message is correct before sending it.

Maps: Apple’s Maps are extended to the car’s built in screen. It is as simple as asking Siri for direction to any of your contact's address, or ask for any street address. You will get turn by turn directions, notifications and audible announcements.

Music: This again is a very simple interface, the buttons for Forward/Skip, Rewind/Back, Play/Pause are big, so are the artist’s name and song titles. The album cover becomes faded and blurred in the background and takes up the complete screen. the overall usability is easy and not distracting.

Many popular car makers have committed to support this technology in vehicles starting with the 2014 models. Unfortunately, I did not notice many, or any vehicles off the assembly line with CarPlay. Other than Ferrari, who has partnered with Apple for the CarPlay launch inside a Ferrari California T at the Geneva auto show in March 2014. If you’re like me, and not planning to purchase a new vehicle anytime soon, Alpine, Pioneer and Kenwood have replacement head units available for your current vehicle.

If you enjoy your iPhone and wish to have a safe way to use it in your vehicle, CarPlay is the solution. I am enjoying Alpine’s iLX-007. It delivers all of the iPhone’s in car experience, keeping my eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

Be Aware of Knock Offs!
If you own an iPhone, or more specifically, an iPhone 5 or later, (5, 5c, 5s, 6, or 6 Plus) what you may not know is, the cable you use to charge your iPhone may cause failures. (improper charge, poor battery life, or no power)

Not all cables are created equally. I have experience many power related issues from customers bringing in their iPhones caused by these knock off cables. These cheap, and let me emphasis on the word “cheap”, cables can cause more damage to your iPhone than they have saved you money.

The original Apple cable will cost between $22 and $35 depending on its length. So when a $10 (or less) cable is presented to you as the an alternative to your original cable, its hard not to take advantage of the savings. However, don’t be fooled, it is not the same as the original Apple cable. I have even had conversation where the cables cost only $0.99. The $0.99 cable was responsible for a failure that cost more than $100.

I’m not saying you have to purchase the Apple branded lightning cable for your iPhone. Some third part cable from reputable manufacture can also be an option. brands such as Belkin have been a manufacturing partner of Apple’s for many years, and make qualifty products. Just remember,  If it’s sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
