St Bartholomew Brightwell Baldwin Pt 2
Last week I showed you the outside of St Bartholomew and hinted at the age of the church. The first place I went was into the church and the view below is the first I had. I did not take it all in at the time and the photos that follow now are what I took. ...

The beautiful #Victorian #Gothic #Church of St Mary’s, Studley Royal Park, North #Yorkshire

Commissioned in 1870 by the first Marquess and Marchioness of Ripon in memory of the Marchioness’ brother, Frederick Grantham Vyner, who was killed during a rescue attempt after Greek bandits had taken him hostage. The unspent ransom, gathered to obtain his release, was used to build St Mary’s, and one other church on their estates. The architect was William Burges and St Mary’s was his “ecclesiastical masterpiece,” the art scholar Sir Nikolaus Pevsner describing it as “a Victorian shrine, a dream of Early English glory."

Lots of interesting things to see inside, from brightly painted lizard-creatures and parrots, beautiful high-quality stained glass, mosaic floors, richly decorated ceilings, to whimsical small carvings of a bird, mouse and a wasp/bee. There are also always helpful and friendly volunteers on hand to answer any questions.

Well worth a visit, as is the whole Studley Royal Park, water gardens and, of course, Fountains Abbey (and that’s another story…..)

As ever, please consider a donation when you do visit.

Thanks for reading ☺
