The American Chemistry Council's lobbyists forced school officials in California to change their new, environmental-based curriculum when they found out that it contained information about plastic bags being harmful to wildlife, leaching toxic substances, and taking over 1,000 years to decompose. Now students are also taught that "plastic bags don't start out as litter; they become litter" and "plastic shopping bags are very convenient to use."

Whether the ACC has a point or not, it is completely offensive to me that a trade group is pushing their marketing message in the lessons that are being taught in public schools. If I had kids, I'd probably be apoplectic...
