Innovus bids farewell to Prof Russel Botman

It is with great sadness that Innovus, the University’s industry interaction and innovation company, bids farewell to Prof Russel Botman, Rector and Vice Chancellor of Stellenbosch University (SU), who passed away on Friday 27 June 2014.

“We are grateful for the invaluable support Prof Botman has shown Innovus and our work to firmly establish innovation and entrepreneurship at the University,” says Ms Anita Nel, CEO of Innovus and Senior Director: Innovation and Business Development at SU. “He was an advocate for entrepreneurship on campus and the establishment of a generation of students and young people who can contribute to the economy of our country – and even Africa.”

In Prof Botman’s own words: “We ask ourselves what is the profile of students leaving our University – how are they positioned and how are they prepared for the future and the economy? By the time you get your degree, your entrepreneurial instincts must have been sharpened to such an extent that you can start your own business and make a success of it – creating employment for yourself and others. We are driven by knowledge and knowledge generation; we are driven by ideas and by thoughts.”

“Prof Botman firmly believed that universities should not only impact individuals but should also have a positive impact on towns, regions and the world,” says Ms Nel. “He said strong partnerships with communities and industry can promote economic and human development.

“We will always treasure not only Prof Botman’s contribution to our work but also the contribution he has made to the University and community as a whole,” she says. “Rest in peace.”

#patentfactfriday  A man submitted a patent in 1979 that almost resembles an iPod. He even went as far as predicting a need for DRM and a way to distribute the music.

WIPO Report Indicates Unprecedented Rise In Renewable #Energy Tech Innovation

A new report commissioned by WIPO shows a huge increase in patent filings related to #renewable energy technologies. The #patent landscape in this area indicates that #innovation is taking place across a greater geographical scope, and is shifting towards the global East. The report, presented this week, opens up questions for policymakers, and for further research regarding drivers for these trends and other measures of #innovation . http://bit.ly/1jt4ZAD
