In 2006, my dreams came true as I became a mom and welcomed Grant to our world. With the exception of being tiny (5lbs 3 ozs.) and not crying, everything seemed perfect as we took our new bundle of joy home. Due to delayed growth and development, we met with a neurologist when Grant was about 4 months old. At 6 months of age, we officially got the news that our sweet boy had a rare and random chromosome deletion. At about the same age, we started having concerns about Grant’s infrequent bowel movements. As Grant got older, things got worse. So did his pain. After going through multiple GI doctors, visits out of state and more tears than I care to think about, we learned that Grant had Chronic Intestinal Pseudo Obstruction. Basically, his brain does not communicate correctly with his intestines. When Grant was 4, an ileostomy was placed.

Fortunately, about this same time, we found Evergreen Home Health Care. They have been such a positive part of our journey. From helping me become a parent C.N.A. to hosting a family Holiday party at the Aquarium, I feel like they are always looking for ways to make life easier (and more fun) for people who already have so much on their plate. We have always had the best Nurse Case Managers. They become more like family and are concerned about Grant as much as I am. Even when the Doctors or I might be stuck on an issue, many times our nurse case manager will be behind the scenes doing her own research. Coming up with things we had not thought about - truly going above and beyond the call of duty. I have had such positive experiences with everyone at Evergreen and I am always amazed when we cross paths that they remember who I am.

The last eleven years have been full of challenges, but also full of much joy and celebration. I am blessed that Evergreen Home Health Care has been by our side through so much of it. I have learned to: appreciate the gifts I have been given - maximize positives and minimize or eliminate negatives - be an advocate - be the "expert" on del10q(26.3) - expect the best from ourselves, Grant and all those that influence his life - cry happy and sad tears - ignore what all the "typical kids" are doing (still hard for mommy) - jump for joy at even the smallest of achievements - love Grant and each other with all our hearts (the easy part). I still have my moments when I mourn for the typical child I do not have – sometimes, the littlest things can put me in a “funk” – especially when he is in pain (which fortunately has not happened for a while). I love the poem, Welcome to Holland (Google it if you are not familiar with it!) and need to regularly remind myself that “…if I spend my life mourning the fact that I didn’t get to Italy, I may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.” I also have a favorite quote by Maya Angelou on a card that was sent to me when we first learned of Grant’s diagnosis: “I CAN be changed by what happens to me. I REFUSE to be reduced by it.” So – here I am – in Holland – learning and growing from each day and enjoying the beautiful view with all my heart!
