Five Questions To Ask before Making the Leap To Innovate

Why It Matters

Deciding to innovate from a place of stability can be unnerving — but it's a must for survival. Here are five questions that will help you move forward while maintaining your existing offerings.


The USS Enterprise was built in the 1950s, commissioned in 1961, and retired in 2013.

That means that the U.S. naval aircraft carrier was being designed "probably before the start of the Korean War," said MIT Sloan senior lecturer Steven Spear, an expert on managing complex development, designs, and delivery.

"Certainly before the Vietnam War, before the Cuban Missile Crisis, before the Navy had to support land-based operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, before anyone had even the glimmer of a possibility of a portable photocopier, let alone a desktop PC," Spear said. "The internal systems, the weaponry, the missions, 50 years later nothing was the same. [It was] designed and rebuilt on the fly."

But reinventing and innovating while keeping an existing enterprise afloat isn’t easy. In a new white paper “Making the leap: Creating new, breakthrough platforms while sustaining existing ones,” Spear proposes five questions an established organization should ask itself as it pursues new innovations.

“The business of business is business” is an oft repeated paraphrase of Milton Friedman’s ideas on the role of business in society. Friedman, and many profit minded shareholders and investors before and since him, argue that the sole role of a business is to generate profit for its owners. Any activities undertaken without this end in mind are misguided. Many business leaders and investors may still feel this way, but consumers, the ones using and buying the business products, are starting to feel differently.

Consumers are increasingly asking questions about the products they use. No longer satisfied with coffee that tastes good or a shirt that looks cool, many of us now want to know where the coffee was farmed and how the shirt was made to ensure that people were paid fairly and treated humanely during the manufacturing of the products. But more than just a “do no harm” mentality, consumers care about supporting business that do good for their communities.

Certified B Corps are for profit companies that have been certified as meeting rigorous environmental and social standards by the nonprofit B Lab. B Corps think differently about what constitutes a profit and strive to deliver value for their broader communities. Whether it’s Patagonia pledging 1% of sales to support environmental organizations, King Arthur Flour employees volunteering nearly 6,000 hours a year to different causes, or Barnana taking scuffed and ripe bananas that would have been thrown away to make their products, certified B Corps from a variety of industries are finding ways to have a positive social impact. Today, there are over 2,400 B Corps in 50 different countries representing over 100 industries.

Only one third of companies say their C-suites are committed to digital transformation. Here's how tech leaders can convince upper management of its value.


Companies must digitally transform to stay competitive, but face challenges getting upper management on board with innovation. Just one third of tech and marketing executives said they think the C-suite is significantly committed to digitally transforming their organizations, according to the Leapfrog Marketing Institute's CMO Digital Benchmark Study, published earlier this year.

"The challenge for the C-suite isn't so much that the transformation is digital, the challenge is that digital technologies are enabling entirely new business models and cost structures," said Michael Kanazawa, the Americas enterprise innovation leader at EY Consulting. "This can mean a tremendous shift in profitability and competitive positioning for a company. The disruptive nature of 'going digital' is what is difficult for the C-suite because it means triggering transformational shifts in the business and significant amounts of change for the entire organization."

While companies often report that they are well into their digital journeys, this is usually not the case, according to research from Altimeter principal analyst Brian Solis. "Companies, as a whole, are not as far along or entrenched in progress as they imagine," he said. "The 'digital' in digital transformation implies technology of course. But the most advanced companies are also learning how digital is affecting customer and employee behaviors, expectations and preferences."

When companies do invest in digital transformation projects, they tend to be short-term with limited budgets, rather than long-term investments for continued success, Solis said.
