Very well-stated: "First, the definition of a fact waffles between truth and proof — two obviously different features. Things can be true even if no one can prove them. For example, it could be true that there is life elsewhere in the universe even though no one can prove it. Conversely, many of the things we once “proved” turned out to be false. For example, many people once thought that the earth was flat. It’s a mistake to confuse truth (a feature of the world) with proof (a feature of our mental lives). Furthermore, if proof is required for facts, then facts become person-relative. Something might be a fact for me if I can prove it but not a fact for you if you can’t. In that case, E=MC2 is a fact for a physicist but not for me. But second, and worse, students are taught that claims are either facts or opinions. They are given quizzes in which they must sort claims into one camp or the other but not both. But if a fact is something that is true and an opinion is something that is believed, then many claims will obviously be both."

We simultaneously know a lot and very little. It's an interesting time to be alive. Perhaps all times have felt like this, but the gap between the knowledge humanity assumes we have and the the knowledge we actually possess seems quite large to me.

I am both amused and saddened.
All over America, people have put small "give one, take one" book exchanges in front of their homes. Then they were told to tear them down.

This is useful to practically no one, but if you need it this is GENIUS. Note: after upgrading and rebooting you will need to follow the instructions on the Fedora wiki for moving /var/run to /run and moving /var/lock to /run/lock (also you should yum reinstall coreutils and run yum groupupdate Base before rebooting)

Neat.  You could probably even use ksplice to avoid the reboot.  ;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ksplice

I finally got around to reading the Chait essay on the resurgence of political correctness in our culture. It rings truer than not.

How fascinating.
The pop star's Pentecostalism asserts that God plays an intimate role in every decision she makes, no matter how large or small.

The best article I have yet seen on ISIS. It's fact-filled and very well-written. A few intriguing excerpts: "As if to show that he could terrorize by imagery alone, Adnani also referred to Secretary of State John Kerry as an 'uncircumcised geezer.'...  [excluding] ideology reflects another kind of Western bias: that if religious ideology doesn’t matter much in Washington or Berlin, surely it must be equally irrelevant in Raqqa or Mosul. When a masked executioner says Allahu akbar while beheading an apostate, sometimes he’s doing so for religious reasons....  most Muslims aren’t susceptible to joining jihad. The ones who are susceptible will only have had their suspicions confirmed: the United States lies about religion to serve its purposes."
The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it is a key agent of the coming apocalypse. Here’s what that means for its strategy—and for how to stop it.

A very useful addendum to Chait's essay: "The problem with political correctness, in this sense, isn’t that it necessarily hurts the causes it claims to advance; sometimes it doesn’t, sometimes it just helps them win. It’s that like most systems of speech policing (which of course held sway in traditional societies as well) it excludes the possibility that those causes might be getting big things wrong, and thus it hurts the larger cause of truth."

This is encouraging news. I hope more politicians begin talking about this.
The Obama administration will take a stab in it’s new budget at important labor market impediment: occupational licensing. Econ blog readers will be familiar with these laws that set frequently overly burdensom rules for who can do certain jobs. They often require far more training than is necessary, expensive classes [...]
