IMA Contractor Awards 2016

The IMA Awards continue the tradition of celebrating teamwork, quality workmanship in roofing and the recognition of the excellence exhibited by the IMA Contractor Network.

Many of the projects reached new extremes for logistical and technical challenges for the roofers who had to operate in most cases while the buildings were still in use by their occupants.

The categories at the 2016 IMA awards were: Reinforced Bitumen Roofing, Eco-Activ Roofing, Green Roofing, Single Ply Roofing, Liquid Applied Waterproofing, Decra Roofing, International Project and the coveted Craftsman of the Year award.

Icopal Staff Raise Over £8000 For The Christie Charity

Having worked with the organisation for four years, Icopal staff in the UK and Ireland have raised a total of £24,000 for The Christie charity. This year, fundraising efforts have resulted in £8000 given to support the trust’s fight against cancer.

Money raised will go towards supporting The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, a specialist cancer centre based in Withington, Manchester. The Christie charity works with the hospital to deliver the latest equipment to ensure patients receive the very best care and treatment. Together they also provide specialist staff and supportive services, including wig and headscarf facilities, complementary therapies and an art room with sessions for patients and carers several times each week.

The Christie charity supports the work of The Christie through its fundraising activities, and delivers projects, equipment and improvements that are over and above what the NHS funds. For example, some key posts across the hospital are also funded by The Christie charity, such as clinical nurse specialists.

Simon Woods, Sales Director at Icopal, said, “Our employees have done a fantastic job to raise this much money. There was a lot of hard work put into fundraising events such as the Three Peaks Challenge and a bike ride from Manchester to Blackpool and back again. People were also sponsored to quit smoking and supported through weight loss programmes and alcohol free months.

“This money will be going towards a great cause and I’m incredibly proud of our employees for the commitment they have shown to supporting a local charity.”

Icopal Decra Brand Celebrates 40 Years Of Innovation
Decra came to the UK on 24th February 1977, meaning this year the company will be celebrating 40 years of roofing innovation and success across residential and commercial markets.

Decra installation of roof tilesKey to the popularity of Decra tiles is the lightweight design and unique fixing method. The galvanised steel tiles are offered in a range of colours and finishes to create the effect of traditional concrete, clay or slate, but require less installation time due to being dry fixed. Pioneers in the roofing market, Decra was the first product of its kind and has since continued to set a precedent for high quality systems with its recent launch – Decra Noxite.

Icopal recognised the continued demand from the construction industry for guidance on how it can reduce the environmental impact of their projects and make a positive contribution to the surrounding areas. It introduced the flat roofing membrane, Noxite, in 2010. Since then, Noxite has been installed on many sites and continues to convert NOx pollution into harmless nitrates, as validated by the BBA (British Board of Agrément). Then in 2016 Noxite and Decra combined forces to release Decra Noxite - combining the durability and lightweight design of the popular Decra Classic tile with the de-polluting technology of the Noxite membrane.

Mike Leigh, Decra Sales Director at Icopal, said: “Our development team constantly assesses the design and performance needs for buildings across the residential, public and commercial sectors - and because of this, Decra is able to adapt to the changing demands and priorities of the industry, and this plays a big part in its continued success.”

Icopal Expands Its Elastoflex Liquid Applied Waterproofing Range

Icopal’s range of waterproofing membranes has a new cold applied liquid solution specially designed for balconies and walkways – Elastoflex Balcony & Walkway System. Based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) technology, the new system cuts installation time so both public access walkways and residential balconies can be accessed within the same day.

The new system is made up of a primer that sits on top of the substrate, then the embedment coating before the reinforcing fabric and a top coat. Finally, the surfacing is applied.

The PMMA technology works with the addition of a catalyst added to the resins, which activates the curing process. Curing time is dependent on the temperature of the substrate and resin volume, which can be calculated before works commence. With the right conditions, this can be as little as 20 minutes. This technology makes it possible for the system to be installed at temperatures as low as -10°C or as high as +30°C, allowing application throughout the year.

As a result of careful engineering, the Elastoflex Balcony & Walkway system is suitable for both public sector and commercial buildings where there is a public access walkway, and residential properties with balconies.

A major benefit of the fast curing capabilities is that there is less disruption caused to residents and pedestrians. Further to this, the waterproofing membrane is encapsulated with an anti-skid surfacing layer providing an impact and slip resistant finish. The surfacing is available in a range of colour options, so that the end product is aesthetically pleasing and suitable for a wide range of specification requirements.

Commenting on the new addition to the range, Simon Ashworth at Icopal, said,

“Our new Elastoflex Balcony & Walkway system is the ideal solution where looking to introduce a fast curing anti-skid waterproof coating to new or existing access walkways, terraces or balconies with minimal disruption to homeowners and occupants. We are keen to deliver great service to our customers so we ensure all installations are carried out by Icopal Approved Contractors. These contractors will have attended and completed training courses with us at our dedicated training centre to ensure the installation is efficient and of high quality.”

Great Roofs: Great Buildings

Icopal’s Parabit DUO and SOLO Hot Melt Membrane Systems are the company’s latest additions. Providing the optimum waterproofing solution, the products allow large roof areas to be covered very quickly when compared to alternative waterproofing membranes, which helps to reduce overall roofing costs.

The Parabit DUO Hot Melt System consists of a very flexible monolithic waterproofing membrane manufactured from a special blend of bitumen synthetic rubbers, polymers and other additives, combined with a spun-bond polyester fabric and high performance elastomeric membrane. There is no risk of water tracking beneath the membrane as the bitumen compound is heated to a liquid and applied directly to the structural deck forming a full and continuous bond to the substrate. Furthermore, because the hot melt layer is monolithic and seamless, there is no risk of lap failure.

The membrane retains its self-healing characteristics throughout its working life, and can tolerate minor construction damage. It can also be applied in low temperatures helping to maximise installer productivity. Immediately after application of the Hot Melt substance the surface is impervious to the elements, making it a robust, fast and durable solution.

The Parabit SOLO system is notably time efficient, as the multiple waterproofing layers are installed in a single operation. This allows for the prompt continuation of other internal trades. Also, detailing such as upstands and plinths can be completed before main system application, so the time of skilled subcontractors is used effectively. Follow on trades, using the roof area as a working platform, can complete their work before the main roof area is installed, limiting the risk of damage to the main waterproofing installation.

The systems are particularly compatible with four types of roof build up: the inverted roof (sometimes referred to as an ‘upside down’ roof), plaza or podium decks, terraces and balconies, and green roofs. Extensive or intensive green roof build-ups can be installed above the completed hot melt waterproofing layer, acting as a ballast and water attenuation system.

Simon Ashworth at Icopal commented: “With Parabit Duo and Solo Hot Melt Roof Waterproofing Systems, we can offer our customers the full package required to protect their buildings from the environment and ensure longevity. The systems’ intricate design combined with the efficiency of the application process, make for a sound investment - in both time and money”.
