Very early on, understanding how formal parameters worked in functions. The idea you could build up your own "language" of ideas as functions, and that's what a program is.

The understanding that source code isn't real. What's real is the semantics of the abstract syntax tree behind your code. That's what makes it possible to translate between programming languages. Source code is a hand-serialized AST. The AST is the fundamental artifact.

The first time I saw a URL, the fundamental (arguably only) innovation of the Web.

The DRY principle.

Meta and meta-meta. Meta-object models (like Matisse) are very cool.

My first programming instructor, first lecture: "The sooner you start, the longer it takes." And, from the same lecture, "If you don't understand how to solve all of it, solve the part you understand. By the time you're done, the part you didn't understand will be at least tractable." Contradictory, dead-on advice.

Affine transformations and linear operators for 3d rendering.

Wish I had time to work thru this--it would be nice to go through the whole stack again, and a great FPGA project
