From dispatching drones to monitor a threatened rattlesnake, to analyzing the snow tracks left by northern river otters, the seven winners of AWI’s Christine Stevens Wildlife Award are using less intrusive methods to study wildlife and offering humane solutions to human-wildlife conflicts. URGENT ACTION NEEDED: The Senate has placed S. 3119, the Endangered Salmon Predation Prevention Act, onto the Senate calendar, meaning the bill may receive a vote at any time. This bill would more accurately be called the "Killing Sea Lions Act," as it amends the Marine Mammal Protection Act to allow for the killing of nearly 1,000 sea lions a year. Sea lions are a natural part of the Pacific Northwest ecosystem; Congress should not be facilitating their removal. Please #DefendMarineMammals and ask your senators to vote NO on S. 3119 when it comes to the floor. http://bit.ly/2KV6hdf

Victory! Today, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit handed a win to one of Earth’s most endangered mammals. The court sided with conservation groups, including AWI, and upheld a four-month-old ban on the United States importing Mexican shrimp and other seafood caught with gillnets that drown vaquita porpoises. Big news! A federal judge ruled today that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service violated both the Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Policy Act when the agency rolled back protections for the world’s only wild population of red wolves living in eastern North Carolina. In response to a lawsuit filed by AWI, Southern Environmental Law Center, Red Wolf Coalition and Defenders of Wildlife, Judge Terrence W. Boyle also made permanent the court’s 2016 order, which stopped the USFWS from capturing and killing red wolves and authorizing private landowners to do the same. Red wolves have been reduced to a single wild population in eastern North Carolina consisting of as few as 30 individuals. Now, a US Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to remove protections from these endangered wolves faces stiff public opposition. Of the 108,000 public comments recently submitted to the agency, 99.9% were opposed to the plan. http://bit.ly/2Q7s8jr

Last year, 12 right whales died in Canadian waters; fewer than 440 North Atlantic right whales likely remain. Today, a broad coalition of animal protection groups, including AWI, submitted recommendations to Canada’s fishery management agency to expand protections for these critically imperiled creatures. http://bit.ly/2CYbkro

Take Action! Wild horses in California are in imminent danger of being sold into slaughter. The US Forest Service plans to sell hundreds of horses for $1 each and “without limitation” (i.e., no restrictions on slaughter). We’re proud to work alongside a number of organizations to help pass the #PAWSAct. This crucial bill—endorsed by members of the domestic violence, animal welfare, and law enforcement communities—would increase protections for domestic violence victims and provide additional resources for shelters so that they can better accommodate #DomesticViolence victims and their pets.

In recognition of #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth, @National Sheriffs' Association Deputy Executive Director and COO John Thompson and @Association of Prosecuting Attorneys President and CEO David LaBahn expressed their organizations’ support for the PAWS Act, and the need to get this legislation passed! #ProtectPetsToo http://bit.ly/2P9Ag61

Over 4 million farm animals drowned in flood waters after being abandoned by farm operators in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. A few weeks later, Hurricane Michael killed more than 2 million chickens in Georgia, according to press reports. The USDA’s Livestock Indemnity Program reimburses farmers for losses regardless of whether they plan for disasters. Please ask Agriculture Secretary Perdue to require farm owners to demonstrate that they have a management plan in place aimed at prioritizing farm animal safety and welfare during natural disasters: http://bit.ly/2yLnGQh (Photo by Kelly Guerin).
