Spring time and some of my epiphyllums are flowering.  The crappy phone camera doesn't do this one justice, the flower is about 15 - 20 cm across.

Went to see The Beards the weekend before last, great show.  My friend had the most awesome beard, it was much admired.

Passed my final certificate of expertise exam, now officially a RHCA.

It looks like my isp changed their secure email certificates overnight and have not seen fit to post the new one in any obvious place I can find... logged a helpdesk call, I am sure hilarity will ensue.

Had a serious WTF moment this evening.  I need to get some information from a government web site.  I didn't have time at work so I thought I would do it from home since the internets are 24/7 aren't they?  Apparently not for this department, I visit the page from home and it tells me that the site is down out of business hours every weekday "for maintenance" WHAT? every day? The only thing I can think of is that they turn off the department computer when they leave for the day... we are in the century of the fruit bat after all.

Who doesn't love a public holiday?  You can find out when they are for South Australia here:

even better - scroll down a bit and there is a iCal file you can download and import into your google calendar (in the pull down next to "other calendars" there is an import option).  Never wonder why you are the only one at work again!

So, I am in the market for a new laptop and have pretty much settled on a Fujitsu S904 because it has the right combination of cpu grunt, memory, battery life and weight.  I do confess to having a fetish for the fujitsu lifebooks.  All the laptops I have bought have been lifebooks.  I was almost upset when a friend suggested I check out a lenovo x1 carbon, it was a little down spec from the S904 but a very nice machine otherwise, so I thought until I noticed the keyboard.... what an abortion.  No caps lock which, being a touch typist, I rely on - even worse in the caps lock spot they have squeezed home and end... wtf?  del and backspace are mashed together, backtick/tilde is tucked away down the bottom and the function keys are some magic "we know wtf you are doing so we will change the touch sensitive strip to match" thing.  I have to wonder how well that will work in Xorg (not really - it is a safe bet it won't).  So, nice try lenovo, you almost had me but I simply cannot work with that insane layout...try again.
