In December of 1941 a little Jewish girl named Marilyn Greene summed up the tone of Christmas in Boyle Heights right after the US was thrown into WWII, “We have a special concern for our loyal American citizens of Japanese descent who are as truly American as any of us.”

On the night of Tuesday, November 22nd, 1938 the Jewish public was backed by their multi-ethnic community in Boyle Heights in protesting the Nazi savagery being inflicted on the Jews of Germany and Austria in the days following the eruptions of Kristallnacht.

Tonight I want us to remember the horrors of Kristallnacht as the precursor to the holocaust. Though we also really need to reflect upon the anti-immigrant crisis that was at the heart of it all and remember the terrorist themed scape-goating that was used to spark this violence against all Jews under the shadow of the Third Reich.

In that time of need all of the various groups and factions came together for the first time.

Thought it wouldn't be the last time. As the collaborations formed at this time would actually live on past this crisis, directly inspiring continued cooperation between our minority communities in civil rights activism for decades to come.

In this video we take a first look at the viaduct right after the eastside arches were removed. I also do a bit of reflecting on the role these viaducts, the river, the train tracks and the eastside boundary which they define plays in the local narrative of Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles.

Who can you name some of the significant barrio related movies, music, literature and art which depict this unique relationship we have with these viaducts?
