On our last trip in South Australia we passed this unique vehicle travelling along the track beside the railway between Quorn & Leigh Creek. Seemed a leisurely and interesting way to see the countryside. Has anybody seen it anywhere lately?

When we were up in Cape York on our last trip we added a few new sites to the listings. One of the camp spots we visited was Captain Billy Landing which is right on the beach on the Eastern edge of Heathlands Regional Park. It is an open grassy area , with a toilet and a picnic shelter. Access is 32 km along a narrow winding track, and I notice on the Qld parks website that the track is being upgraded in May! Suitable for 4WD off road vehicles only. You can see more info on our updates page on the website or on:

If you have a 4WD a visit to Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve (NT 50 in Camps 8) which is 160km S of Alice Springs is worthwhile. The access road is sandy in spots and there is a rather steep jump up, so care is needed. There are 2 campgrounds to choose from, both have toilets and fire pits. Once you are set up, several walking tracks enable you to explore both Chambers Pillar and Castle Rock. At sunrise and sunset, the Pillar glows like a burning ember as the rays of the sun strike its face, a great photo opportunity! We put this site on our list of favourite remote camps.

Cape York - Old Laura Homestead
Not to be missed when travelling the Cape, its a great spot to wander around and get an understanding of how tough life was for the early pioneers who opened up the Cape. Camping sites are 400 metres away from the Homestead by the river crossing.
