The African bush is a funny place: I have been living in it or near to it for 18 years and yet there have been (until recently) two inhabitants that I have never ever seen. That was until recently! My avian nemesis for like ever has been the Pel's Fishing Owl. I finally tracked it down in the Okavango Delta and the wait was worth it because not only did I see it eating a fish but the super moon was setting behind a cloud of smoke (from bush fires) in the background.

Today is a bitter sweet day for me. I am packing for a 20 day safari to Kenya which we booked last year. Our goal was to photograph one of the biggest tusker bulls left in Africa. We had booked a plane and the services of Richard Moller from the Tsavo Trust to help us find him. Sadly the poachers found Satao before we could. We are still going up and it is my hope that we can find another big tusker to photograph? The only solace is that Satao's genes live on and maybe future generations will see his tusks again...

Truly sad Greg. I wish that we as photographers could do more to protect our precious wildlife.

So powerful. Thank you SO much for sharing. I am a wildlife photography but in this high speed digital age I seldom just sit and listen.

A night to remember:
Last night was really an incredible night! Sir David Attenborough read the names of the winning photographers and to hear his voice and to shake his hand was just awesome. Princess Kate gave out awards and the MC was the legendary photographer Frans Lanting. Two of my images were highly commended in the two largest categories, birds and mammals Four other South Africans placed in the top 100 including young Skye Meaker who took his winning shot on safari with me in the Mara last year and placed in the 11-14 year age category. Well done Skye! Check out other winners here: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/wpy/gallery/2014/adult.html
View winning images in the adult competition and the adult award categories. Vote for your favourite and add comments.
