Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes - so many I have to do the impersonal "thanks to everyone" but you know who you are. Couldn't respond on the day itself, as I was too busy mountain biking and then drinking wine :-)

Favorite panorama from the recent Java Posse Roundup. The town of Crested Butte.

I thought Mount Madonna had twin peaks.  Very pointy ones....

In preparing a new Java Posse episode to go out, I read this on Jeff Atwood's Coding Horror blog. It moved me to make a posting since I see this so often.

"#30: Developer gold-plating. Developers are fascinated by new technology and are sometimes anxious to try out new features of their language or environment or to create their own implementation of a slick feature they saw in another product--whether or not it's required in their product. The effort required to design, implement, test, document, and support features that are not required lengthens the schedule."

If you don't know the person/persons on the project upon which you are working that are doing this, then it might be you! In addition, I would just say that the place to do stuff like this is on your own open source project, not on something with a deadline and clients waiting. It's not wrong to want to try something new, but if you believe it enough to really do it, consider doing it on your own dime.

Being disciplined about testing can moderate this tendency. When grandiose ideas about how I can introduce some fractal abstraction start infiltrating my head, I just think of all the test code I would have to write and all the hypothetical code lines I'd have to cover and I get a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Crouton/Linux  -

As someone who already has been bitten by this.

If you are running crouton with the chrome beta channel, and it is still working, I recommend switching back to stable channel right now before the next update. It seems that changes to beta have broken the ability of xorg to run for crouton. Here is the bug report:

https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton/issues/524

and

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=328115

If you already have this problem, the top link has some workarounds (that sadly disable hardware acceleration, but do get things working). Also, if you feel compelled to star the bug to get it higher in the pain list, please refrain from sending nasty comments through in the replies. As a developer myself, there is little that is less motivating than a lot of rude, angry messages. I believe a fix is coming, but now I wish I had acted on my impulse earlier in the week and switched to stable before this happened.

Ugh damn. Just got bit by this after upgrading to : Version 33.0.1750.51 beta. It's surprising how long this has remained unfixed. It looks like a patch has been accepting and just needs to be merged and find its way downstream.
