Harmony From The Heart: The fruit of god

Coconut is familiar to most of us as a thirst quencher and ingredient for delectable curries, but do you know that the humble coconut is one of the most meaningful symbols in Hinduism? If you look closely at a coconut with most the fiber on it removed, you will see three ‘eyes’ on it. To Hindus, these ‘eyes’ represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva. This is the reason why the coconut is also known as “Sriphala” or fruit of God.
Take another look at the coconut again, and you will find that it looks like the head of a human being. This is why you would see devotees smashing coconuts on the ground during important celebrations such as Thaipusam. By smashing the fruit, the devotee is actually shattering his ‘ego’ symbolically, and recognizing that the gods are greater than him. It is also a statement that humans are frail and easily destroyed, thus any credit for personal success is due to the gods. While coconut shell represents the human ego, the clear juice and white kernel within represent the clean inner thoughts and prayers, as fit offerings to the gods. In this way, devotees believe they will receive blessing from the deities. On what other occasions do the Hindus smash the coconut? Share your answers with us in the comment below.

Today, about one in four ITE graduates go on to our local polytechnics..." -- DPM Teo Chee Hean at the Opening Ceremony of WorldSkills Singapore 2014. A statistic which SMS for Education, Indranee Rajah, highlighted in Parliament yesterday.
