THE federal opposition has joined the government in backing the report from the International Education Advisory Council, despite its implicit criticism of some Coalition states.

Shadow Universities Minister Brett Mason said he “generally” supported the recommendations, which were released on Wednesday. Tertiary Education Minister Chris Bowen has already committed to two of the 35 recommendations and said he expected to implement most.

Senator Mason highlighted recommendations to improve student support and engagement mechanisms. They include ensuring that international students can get treatment in public hospitals and the same transport concessions as their domestic counterparts.
