Object-Relational Mappers (ORMs) are awesome if you think about your database a collection of objects. They're awful if you think about your database as a database. My primary client right now is ZipRecruiter and my work involves rewriting one of their internal systems to be more flexible.

I love this line. "Today's NSA secrets become tomorrow's PhD theses and the next day's hacker tools."

Back in 2001 I was working for a company who had a client who was in a serious bind: the maker of their point of sale (POS) system suddenly jacked up the license fee to the point where our client would go out of business. They needed a new POS in 21 days. We grabbed an open source POS system and ...

"AnandTech's Intro To Semiconductor Tech" http://feedly.com/e/mV49oFA4

Fun
An anonymous reader writes: Computer hardware site AnandTech has posted a detailed introduction to semiconductor technology. It's deep enough to be insightful for understanding the chips that run your devices and the industry that built them, but also short enough that your eyes won't start bleeding...

For me this is a huge win!
Ars Technica reports that "J. Michael Straczynski will shortly begin work on a rebooted big-screen version of his 1990s sci-fi TV series [ Babylon 5]." From the article: According to JMS's latest announcement, the new script will be targeted at a 2016 theatrical release and will be a reboot of the ...

"Schneier: Everyone Wants You To Have Security, But Not From Them" http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/ZLcRFUpaZ08/story01.htm
An anonymous reader writes: Bruce Schneier has written another insightful piece about the how modern tech companies treat security. He points out that most organizations will tell you to secure your data while at the same time asking to be exempt from that security. Google and Facebook want your dat...

Good words about COBOL?  Finally someone agrees with me.
By now you've heard the announcement that the Perl 6 team is cautiously hopeful that Perl 6.0.0 will be released this year. There are three things they need to finish: The Great List Refactor (which should improve performance); Native Shaped Arrays (tell Perl 6 that you only have 10 elements and ...

Android: Tasker plugins are increasingly the coolest parts of Tasker. AutoInput—another plugin from the same developer that brought us the amazing AutoVoice—allows you to automate every single swipe, tap, and keystroke to your heart's content.

rakudobrew is similar to perlbrew, but it's for Rakudo (a.k.a., Perl 6), the Perl-inspired language that we've all come to have a love/hate relationship with. I urge you to try it out, but first, some interesting new developments that you should probably know about.

Good stuff!
Mon, 18 Aug 2014. Language design: Exploiting ambiguity. Currently, in designing lanuages, we don't allow ambiguities -- not even potential ones. We insist that it must not be even possible to write an ambiguous program. This is unnecessarily restrictive. This post is written in English, ...
