4th year students of Creative Multimedia are commencing their final year projects this week. Here's an interesting overview of one such project being developed in Unity 3D by Adrian Fielding. The post illustrates the development of both technical and creative skills in students from year to year culminating in the completion of a 3D 3rd person shooter game for the project module in year 4.

For the project module of the level 8 degree course I am currently enrolled on at LSAD Clonmel I will be creating a third person shooter game using the Unity 3D game engine. This game continues with the series I have been working on throughout my time on the course. In the first year we were tasked with creating a walk cycle animation and adding keyboard interactions using Adobe Flash and programming in Actionscript 3. I chose to design an Elvis character and put him in Las Vegas walking between the temptations of cheeseburgers and showgirls. http://www.adrianfielding.com/Elvis.html

For one of our assignments in the second year our objective was to create a top down 2D shooter using Adobe Flash and Actionscript 3. I chose to create “Just Another Zombie Game” were the objective is to get a high score by shooting and frying zombies and stopping them reach the civilians http://www.adrianfielding.com/zombieGame.html

In the third year we were tasked with creating a game using all our previous Actionscript programming knowledge and also using the Nape physics engine (similar to the physics engine used in Angry Birds). This is when the idea of combining the characters of my previous projects occurred to me and I created a side scrolling shooter with Elvis on a quad bike taking on the zombie hordes. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=238401632951262

For this year’s project Elvis will once again be taking on the zombies, but this time it will be in 3D. I intend to use Zbrush and 3DS Max to create the characters and game world then bring them into Unity3D where I will be using Javascript to program the mechanics of the game. I will also be creating original music for the game https://soundcloud.com/adrian-fielding-1 and creating all the 2D elements such as the user interface and title and high score screens.

I am currently creating concept art for the characters and environments and working on an art style and atmosphere for the game. I am collaborating on the concept art with a very talented artist, Daniel González López who is attending the Digital Animation course at LSAD as part of the ERASMUS.program, I am hoping Daniel will bring a fresh perspective to the art direction and character design.

I intend to use this opportunity to explore new technologies and techniques which will build on the skills I possess. I will be modelling the characters and environments using the latest methods of professional videogame artists, building a high polygon mesh in Zbrush then using 3DS Max to create a a low polygon model optimised for a videogame which will be deployed on a mobile device. I will be using 3DS Max to create the textures for the models and also to rig and animate them. I will import these into the Unity game engine where I will be using the Mono Development programming environment to add all the logic to the game.

I have attached several images of the initial concept sketches and game logo, I will continue to update the #icollab community as I progress with this project and look forward to hearing your advice and feedback.

This is a very nice example of a cross modular animation and programming project developed by a 1st year Creative Multimedia student (Adrian Fielding) in 2011. Adrian designed the animated character and then used ActionScript programming to control the character movement and parallax scrolling [Eamon D].
