A plea for, above all, patience with Portalarium and Shroud of the Avatar. The game is using a totally new development process; it’s bound to be bumpy.

From my personal perspective I would say people don't understand software development. Even with website creation there is always they "what's taking so long" mentality. However, I don't think people are jumping ship because of these types of things. I am also well invested in SOTA; however at this point I don't see it as anything that will hold my interest over other games. For me the issues are combat and advancement.

I was behind the glyph system at first but it doesn't work for me. I am hoping as the game polishes this will seem better, but that alone cancelled my quest for getting all the hats. For advancement, use-based killed it for me. If I can advance by sticking my sword in the dirt, why risk travelling? Since its a player economy there is not even a loot reward at the end; all there is left is resources to encourage venturing out. These are personal things so I don't hold it against people enjoying the game as is. However if these things remain I will probably spend my rare free time elsewhere.

I would never ditch my pledge though. I bought in to let these developers make what they wanted. I have backed many games I did not enjoy so that is not a requirement. I hope the final product or beyond will grow more on me, but because of this I can understand why others might want to cut their losses or recoup their cash. Backing games early is not for everyone.

For me the SOTA development experience and meeting and chatting with these visionary people as well as the community they fostered was worth every dollar I donated even if the game is not for me. I will still stay involved and active enough to have house just to have access to these great people. I just hope the games resonates with non-backers after launch to see the 5 episode story play out.

Last weekend I was down in Austin with a great group of people for an amazing 2 day LARP on +Richard Garriott de Cayeux 's property. It was a celebration of Ultima and the past, but I'm equally excited looking forward to his new game, Shroud of the Avatar.

It is an audacious project with a small team and a small budget. So I'm hesitant to over-promise and brag it up a bunch, but the concept does really excite me.

It is a spiritual successor to Ultima with selective multiplayer. Play it offline like a classic single player Ultima with a full campaign. Play it single player, but pull data from online. You can play online with friends only, or you can play online with everyone like an MMO, but no monthly subscriptions. You pay once per episode, and that is it.

If you back the game, you get immediate alpha access. The new release is out, and while it is far from feature complete, it is starting to come together as a fun game.

It is far more like UO than WoW and modern online RPGs (though it isn't a carbon copy of UO. It is a great community and if you love classic computer RPGs, I highly recommend checking it out.

If you do back the game, please consider putting my email address down as a referrer since they do referral rewards - enderandrew@gmail.com
