Safety mechanisms, 10 things you need to know, will they protect you and people on your site?
We all see the signs, emergency, press, pull here. In an emergency situation will they work and are they located in the best position? By position, I am not just talking about stopping the equipment or activating alarms at one location. In our automated world, we have less people, can a working on the other side of the building activate an emergency response quickly?
Do you have emergency stops / lanyards / pull wires / switches?
Can you access these easily?
Are signs located to identify these controls quickly?
Can these controls be activated at one or multiple locations?
When was the last time you tested these and do you have records to support this?
How did you test these, just press the button, pressed multiple locations and tried to restart equipment. Can the equipment automatically restart or be restarted remotely??
Move beyond just the immediate location and single test function, consider people working on other equipment and maintenance activates on isolated equipment.
Is these a schedule in place to maintain, service and test this equipment?
Is the equipment interlocked with other equipment?
Have you trained people, full time, part time, contractors how to use this equipment?
