Great week for MLWGS! Thanks to all of the staff and players who made this week happen! Charles Yang won his first tournament today with a perfect score of 4.0/4 in the K–12 Open section. Yang Zhang took 2nd with 3.5/4, and Jeffrey Song and rising freshman Santosh Dasari scored 3.0/4 to tie for 3rd. Matthew Normansell placed 5th with 2.5/4. Go Dragons!

MLWGS has just won the Virginia High School Chess League Championships! 

In the League Final against Godwin HS, Bryan Kaperick and Charles Yang both won, and Isaac Steincamp drew, sending the match into extra time with a score of 2.5-2.5.

In extra time, Isaac Steincamp, Shreya Shetty, and Charles Yang all won, out scoring Godwin 3-2.

The MLWGS Chess Team won 1st in the U1200 National High School Chess Championships this past weekend in San Diego, California. In the individual standings, Bryan Kaperick took 4th, Bobby Grayson ranked 9th, and Matthew Normansell placed 12th. In the Championship section, Isaac Steincamp finished 76th place of the 338 competitors.

MLWGS also ranked 9th place overall in the National Blitz Tournament, as Isaac Steincamp (7.5/12), Bobby Grayson (7.0/12), Jeffrey Song (6.0/12), and Bryan Kaperick (5.0/12) all got big wins to land the surprise finish. Isaac Steincamp finished 49th place, and Bobby Grayson took 59th and 3rd for his rating class.

The MLWGS Chess Team took second place in the K–12 section of the Virginia Scholastic and Collegiate Chess Championships last weekend in Roanoke. This is the highest ever finish for any MLWGS chess team.

In individual competition, junior Isaac Steincamp scored 4.5/6, earning place, and freshman Shreya Shetty scored 3.5/6 as well as a 24th place finish. In addition, David Clayton won the Top U1400 award, with 3.5/6 and a 25th place finish, and Matthew Normansell scored 3.0/6 to win the 2nd place U1100 award.

Mark your calendars! The next MLWGS Free Chess Clinic is Monday, January 13th from 5-7PM! This month we are pleased to present a special guest, Grandmaster Sergey Erenburg who will conduct a simultaneous chess exhibition!

In addition, Mr.Hoffpauir, President of the Virginia Scholastic Chess Association, will conduct a special session “How to Start a Scholastic Chess Club at Your Child’s School” from 6–7PM.

As always, the clinic is free and open to all scholastic players, and there is no need to register!
