The Raj Quartet has something War and Peace lacks: an evil presence of enormous pathos. It is the almost vibrant desolation around this person which confirms Scott as a “tolerant” novelist in the most positive sense. This villain is Ronald Merrick, whose name, as so many in this novel, sounds overtones, here those of merit gone wrong...

E.D. Hirsch (the cultural literacy guy) has, I think, written the most important article on educational "outcomes" in a long time. The great benefit of education, "the key to increasingly upward mobility," is expanding the vocabulary of students. Why is that?

In fact, you could say the purpose of just about every expansion of government program is designed to reduce stress. Poverty is stressful; unemployment is stressful; saving enough for retirement is stressful; obesity is stressful; raising a family is stressful; terror attacks are stressful; lack of health insurance is stressful.
