Whether the letter from the mayor provides a boost is unclear. In 1998, Councillor Ila Bossons was asked what impact Lastman’s letter might have, telling a reporter: “We’re going to become the laughingstock of Canada with a letter like this.”

At one point, as her boyfriend napped, Justine Otten quietly slipped online to research his cancer. She was a medical sciences student and an optimist, but she was also frightened by what she found: “I finally closed my laptop and just cried.”
