HOW SPECIFIC DO TREATMENTS FOR PAIN NEED TO BE?

Most of the time, complex examinations and treatment rituals are performed, in order to diagnose and treat said pain.

Patients feel like they are getting good value, practitioners feel like they are providing it.

But is it necessary to go through all these examinations, and aim for all these specific hands on, taping and exercise techniques to help people get better?

I’m going to argue, that no, it isn’t.

Rehabilitation Is More Than Just Exercise

While exercise can be a very important part of rehabilitation from pain and injury, alone it is not rehabilitation.

The big picture, including contextual factors, always need to be considered.

11 IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT PAIN

This is mammoth post, but it's worth the read.

Clocking in at over 3000 words, it's getting to the point where I should just finish that book I started a few years ago.

But until that point, I've summarised 11 key points about pain that I take for granted, but many of my patients might not know, or remember.

This happens in part, because of the curse of knowledge, which is explained in the post.

Take your time with this one, it's like a lot of mini-posts in one, bookmark it and come back to it as you need, until it all sinks in.

PS The photo has nothing to do with pain, it's just Melbourne at sunset from my balcony 🌇😍

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE PAIN

A mentor type person once told me that "People don’t seek your help because of their pain, they seek your help because of the pain their pain causes."

This has to be the shortest blog post I've ever written (still around 900 words though), so there's no excuse not to read.

When it comes to managing tissue injuries, the formula is simple.

How we achieve each component is where the challenge lies, and where the skill of your clinician becomes important.

This post is a guide to my process for managing injuries and localised tissue pain.

YOUR BODY IS NOT A MACHINE

Why Do We Use Machine Analogies?

In a word: simplicity.

But, your body is not a machine, and that is an extremely good thing.

Your body is a biological entity, which adapts over time to the stimuli it is exposed to.

3 UNCONVENTIONAL REASONS TO STRETCH

When it comes to stretching, most people immediately think of flexibility.

And whilst stretching can help improve flexibility, it has other benefits too, many which are overlooked by personal trainers and clinicians who write exercise programs.

This post outlines 3 more "unconventional" reasons to stretch (although I kind of cheated with one).

Have a read and decide to make stretching a part of your exercise program, you've got lots to gain.

ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY? TREAT THE WHOLE FOR BETTER RESULTS

The current focus for tendon rehabilitation is on using load management strategies combined with targeted exercises.

While these are effective, and should form part of a management plan for Achilles tendinopathy, I believe we can deliver better outcomes when we consider the whole person.

To do this, we need to think beyond "usual care" and piece together what is working in clinical practice, what is working in other disciplines and what might work but hasn't been studied yet.

Whether you're a therapist or a patient, have a read to see how we can apply osteopathic principles to the treatment of Achilles tendinopathy.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE CONSERVATIVE HEALTH CARE

Conservative treatment options benefit many painful conditions while reducing costs and avoiding unnecessary risk.

Why is it then, that only one in five people with low back pain will receive appropriate conservative treatment from health care practitioners?

THE EASY WAY TO IMPROVE ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

Often, performance plateaus despite you working harder than ever.

What if there were an easier way to continue to improve than logging more and more hours of hard work?

Don't be mistaken, you can't replace sweat equity.

What you'll learn here, is how to think differently about performance, so that you can "release your brakes" and express your true potential, whatever your sport.
